Spot on Tom, one poster on here last week called the greatest manager of all time purple face and a liar then referred to United fans as "floorboarders", you could just tell he was spoiling for an argument.

Having said that I clicked on your link a few days ago and couldn't quite make out who you was railing at so kept quiet, but whoever it was I presume you have the choice to opt out and not give them the "steam off your poo" unlike your beloved royal family who no one has and we have to pay for regardless.

As for my beloved Royal Family, I think that the institution of the Royal Family, help make this country what it is in terms of its prestige in the world, the Royal Family are a force for 'good' for this country, they bring wealth into this country, they give us an identity in the world, they make us who we are, and in the world our parliament is referred to as 'The Mother of Parliaments, and when the winds off change occurred after the second world war, and political fashion dictated that our empire should be dismantled, most of the countries in our empire, elected to stay affiliated to us by way of being a member of the British Commonwealth, with the Queen as the head of it.

Chatty I could go on and on about this, because now that we are finally free from the 'bonds' of the EU we are now connecting again 'properly' with our commonwealth friends, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc etc

It should be remembered that Australia voted in a referendum to keep things as they were and keep the Queen as their head of state.

You've told us in the past how much they bring into the country but can never give a definitive amount?
Yet the French who binned their royal family centuries ago ( but kept the palaces) can tell you they get more foreign visitors than any other country in the world.
So maybe all those Japs who you see with their nose pressed against the raillings at Buckingham Palace and never get to see or within a quarter of a mile of the royal family may just turn up even if they weren't hiding inside.

I am not a card carrying royalist nutcase, who loves the Queen and all who sail in her, I don't follow royal visits or anything like that, I only occasionally have watched the Queens speech on Christmas Day, because such thing bore the pants off me.
However, I believe that the Monarchy as an 'institution' the 'thing' itself has been very good for our Country.

Pedantic's also bore the pants off me, however on about the Australians, French and the Japanese.

Is 22 years such a long time in history, to say that a referendum is irrelevant, when things like referendums tend to be done on a 'generational' timescale ?

At that time in the late 1990's the fortunes of our royal family were at a very low ebb, after the royal divorces and the death of Diana, that is why the republican movement in Australia pushed hard for the referendum at that time, because of the 'perceived' unpopularity of the British Monarchy, they thought that gave them the best chance to win the republican 'no' to the Monarchy vote, and if they could not win the 'no' to the Monarchy back vote then, I very much doubt that they could win it now.

In 1999 those opinion poles said that the 'no' to the Monarchy vote, would win the referendum, that is another reason why the republican movement wanted a referendum at that time, and those opinion poles were wrong.

France and the French culture is unique and interesting, Art, History and Science, the French have done their bit, and it is also the gateway to Europe, people fly to France, as a starting point for a visit to Europe, and also a lot of people visit France for the military history of both world wars, in America most families have relatives which were lost in those wars, so they go to France to honour their memory, and visit their graves.

I will tell you what I am really interested in, and that is politics, and because I don't have any political allegiance, that enables me to see both sides of political arguments.
For instance Kier is now doing his job, and he is being a pain the arse for Boris, he has made my skin crawl with the way he has played politics with the Covid thing, and the Brexit thing, when he and his ilk should have put the country first, but now we are back to 'normal' in the last week he has impressed me, because he really got Boris going in PMQ's last Wednesday

However, I realise that most people would rather watch paint dry than talk about politics, and I respect that opinion, and all I ask for is that they do the same for me, and respect my opinion, even if they don't agree with it

I am using Manchester United as an example, but it would be the same for any of the big clubs.

Nothing new there, the match going fans contribution in terms of revenue was gazumped by telly viewing fan decades ago.

On your previous post to that which I have only just seen, my point stands that you have the choice wether or not you "give the steam off your poo" into the footballing coffers, but none of us do when it comes to the Royal Family coffers.
