Mayor of Wigan

Started by: the pesky yank (19)

Hello to everyone in Wigan World, Patty, the Pesky Yank here...

Brian posted a picture of my Great Uncle in the Photo Gallery "Album" (June 1st) under Halligan Family. I'm not sure of the year it was taken, but if anyone recognizes the Mayor or the Bishop my Uncle is talking to, it might narrow the years a little for me.

Wigan World is such a GREAT SITE! Thank you to all for reading my message.

Hello everyone!!!

I am so HAPPY ... Thank you Wigan World!

I received an answer on my Halligan and Doherty posting. I still have cousins on your side of the "pond".

Thank you again.

I think the guy behind the Bishop is Alan Fitch MP. Don't know the Mayor looks a bit like Charlie France.

Thank you for your help !

After trying to decipher so many old pictures these past couple months that belonged to my grandparents, I will make sure that I faithfully label my own.

The mayor could be Thomas Cobley. If this is so it would be the early 60's

Thank you Christi,

The 60's it is! Since my Great Uncle had that crop of white hair (as do I) it was difficult to guess the year. My white hair started coming in when I was in my teens (back in the 60's). Ahhhhh ... over 40 years ago!!! Ha Ha.

Everyone in Wigan World has been so helpful and nice to this "Pesky Yank", I truly appreciate your friendliness. This site has opened up a whole new world of family for my family on this side of the Pond. We now are in contact with some of our long lost cousins.

Thank you,

Patty

What does Pesky mean pesky, Ive heard the saying before, never quite understood the meaning and now that we have a genuine westerner on site I would first like to bid you welcome and then hope that you can tell me the meaning .

I first came across the word "Pesky" many years ago when reading the comics of D. C. Thomson, publishers of many childrens comics, it simply means, pestering.

Hello Aitch and Dave,

Yes, it means to "pester", to "not give up", "to keep bothering someone". Thank goodness you Wiganers weren't annoyed by this "pesky Yank"!!!

If there is anything else you would like to know about us Yanks, just ask, if I don't know, I will certainly try and find out for you.

Regards to all from across the Pond,

Patty
