Why hasn't Wigan got a statue of George Formby

The earlier post title inspired this one.
Seriously, George Formby was a legend in his time. The highest paid star at the time and a massive contribution to the war effort.
I watched No Limit the other day with my kids. They loved it. It was the film where George won the Isle of Man TT races. Remember it? His bike, the Shuttleworth Snap?
And all Wigan has is a little blue plaque opp. Tesco, disgraceful.

Yes, an excellent idea Brian, maybe that could be paid for by Wigan's councillors who were recently given a large increase in their pay/allowances. Could they not donate the difference of their old pay/allowance and new pay/allowance, to a fund for such a scheme? Or will pigs be seen to fly over Wallgate.

He still is very famous and I agree he should have more than an aging plaque.
As for the money to make it, they could use the money they are NOT going to spend on a concert venue that they promised us at the pier complex

George was an errand boy for my wifes granddad in Hindley. We have a photograph of the shop I will send it to you Brian. George came from Wigan not Warrington - Morecambe has a statue for Eric Morecambe so why can't we have one for George Formby!

Ask Morecambe council, they have one of Eric......errr can't remember his surname oh yes its Bartholomew, did you know he was actually director of Luton Town F.C and they still built a statue of him.

It's in this weeks observer they are putting a statue of GFBY in the grand arcade when it opens.

That arcade is going to be really 'tacky', what, with a cafe done up about Wigan Casino, and now a statue of George Formby.
For a start, George Formby, as good as he was, in his day, is virtually unknown to anybody under forty, which just happens to be the age group of 'prime customers' who will be expected to spend their 'hard earned' in there in order to make it pay.
Next is Wigan Casino. Almost unheard of in todays youth and a place which Wigan council tried their best to shut down, in it's heyday. Liked, and fondly remembered, by the few, it's memory is carried on by 'them as know nowt'.
Yes, folks. They are 'scraping the barrel' there.
Just like they did with Liverpool Airport. Fancy, naming it after that long haired, drug taking, depressive drop-out when they could have named it something fittingly respective of the famous river who's banks the place is sited on.
It makes me cringe every time I walk past his statue, at the top of the escalator, and see tourists, mainly Japanese or American, having their picture taken standing at the side of it. With a daft smile on their face.
Anyway, I'm off again later tonight, to my place in the sun (I've heard it's raining), I'll give Him the fingers as I walk past.

I'm under 40yrs of age and know about George Formby and the Casino. I've just acquired 19 films of George Formby on DVD - I showed my kids 'No Limit', the film where he takes part in the TT Races on the Shuttleworth Snap, they loved it.

Ditto Brian, im 31 and think George Formby is some one for TRUE WIGANERS to be proud of, i mean look at some of the bad examples of famous people other towns and cities are proud of, also Wigan Casino, I never went in the place but have listened to some people who have from all over England, thats something that they remembered about our town and therefore should be remembered for years to come by people who live here, after all look at all the famous people who remember Wigan because of it. As for sticking 2 fingers up to a statue of John Lennon well that just makes me think he's on yet another wind up or he is very bitter for some reason, oh yea it's raining where tonkers going, must be that then.

I think the George Formby statue is a great idea, its the cost though which is a worry.I know that the council is not footing all of the cost but it is still a lot of money nonetheless. I always felt sorry for George, i dont know behind the laughter i see sadness, (sorry, just havin a psychic moment).
Wigan casino cafe - i was too young for this era( just about) love the music though. I know some people that would love this. We need to keep our memories alive of Wigan. Sorry, if this dissapoints Tonker!
