I don't know for definite which colliery he worked at but my great grandad also lived on Warrington Road in Abram and he worked at The Maypole Colliery which apparently was 5 minutes away from Warrington Road.
He worked there until the disaster in 1908 apparently. He was involved with the rescue and was deeply scarred with what he saw down there and never went back down another mine afterwards.

It is likely that my great grandad (John Davies) knew your grandad!

I know its not definite but I hope that this helps.

Look up http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cmhrc/map90.htm

You will see a map showing mines in the Abram area about 1923. Along with Maypole was Wigan Junction and Mains Colliery. The only other one in the immediate area was Albert Colliery which I think was at the bottom of Bickershaw Lane.

Thank you for the help, it is possible that my grandad knew your great grandad,I will investigate further, see if I can find out if there are any records anywhere.
I have looked at the website and printed a copy off, thanks!

Hi again,

I don't know whether this helps, my boyfriend is visiting the National Coal Museum in Wakefield today through work (he works for Yorkshire Water so I've no idea why he's visiting a coal museum!)

Anyway, I was just having a browse around their website: http://www.ncm.org.uk/library.asp
and according to them, archived material for each coal mine and the people who worked there (if it survives) is deposited in the local records office.

I don't know whether this will be of any help to you, its just something I found: http://www.cmhrc.co.uk/

Good luck and keep us updated with what you find!

Helen.
