There's a Holmes House Avenue in Winstanley.

I don't think they'd have named an avenue after a two up-two down.

edit 15.00 If it was related it probably would be Holme's House though. Still, you never know.

There is a Holme Terrace IN wigan just off Mesnes Road. I think it is the first left after the Brocket. ends at Lessingham Avenue, so the odds are that there may have been a family with that name in Wigan, years ago. Try getting in touch with the History Shop, bottom of Library Street.

Elizabeth Holmes b 1893 Wigan

Charles 1909 Warrington

perhaps that gives you the start you need you can go on the I G I and just insert the Surname but you will have to go through over 200 nmaes and see whats there it could be 2,000 names I when I was doing my research went through quite often over 5 thousand names to find children of family best of luck

Wendy,
I am just a bit puzzled, are you looking for Holme, or Holmes,? if you are including Holmes in your search, there is a Masonic Lodge named Holmes Lodge in Wigan it is Lodge No 2708 and the first Master of this lodge was a C. B. Holmes, he was Master in 1898, so that could be a date for you to use in your search, as he must have been a prominent person in Wigan to have had a Masonic Lodge named after him. The name Elizabeth Holmes born 1893, that Elizabeth has mentioned, could have been his Daughter as the dates seem to be about right.
Cheers Fred.

In 1881 the surname Holme was most prevalent in the Lancaster area. A lower representation occured in Liverpool and Wigan. The next level occurred in Carlisle, Blackburn, Manchester, Lincoln and Luton.Small numbers were found in Inverness, Dumfries, Durham, Licoln, East Midlands, Walsall,Gloucester, Milton Keynes, South East London and Sutton. In the rest of the UK it was rare.

There was a Hugh Holme who lived at Holland House (now Holland Hall) who married Anne Bankes in 1731. Anne was the sister of William Bankes of Winstanley Hall. Hugh Holme helped supervise work on making the River Douglas navigatable from Wigan, along with the Bankes' and other colliery owners. It took most of the 1730's to complete.

Hi Wendy,

My wife's grandfather was a Holme and was a blacksmith in Higher Ince. We believe that at some time the family added an "s" to their name and became therefore Holmes.

I´ve done quite a lot of research into a family of Holmes,
originally from Marsh Green area of Wigan ( early 1800s )
2 of them went to Australia, 1 returned to Wigan with his new family in 1873.
Lots of earlier records had them as Holme, others as Holmes.
When you can´t read or write it doesn´t matter too much.

Have you come across any of the "HOLME" family coming from Blackburn that lived near to Ewood park football stadium.

Hello!! I found this topic through Google and just joined the site so I can find out more information!
My name is not really Holmes but I am interested in Joseph Holmes born in 1831 in Wigan, Pemberton, Lancashire, England. He did not marry a local. He married a lady, Mary Clark Woodhead from Rawmarsh, Yorkshire and almost immediately migrated to Australia in 1856. He is my 3x great grandfather!! His mother was Hannah and it seemed he lived with Hannah and Samuel Holmes who may not have married Hannah. He appears in the 1841 and 1851 censuses if we have the correct man.
We don't know about siblings nor where either of his parents are from or their parents.
If ANYONE has information, or if they think they may be related, I would be delighted. I have done DNA testing so we could compare if you have done that testing too.
There is a lot of relatives here in Australia!!!! The township of Holmesville is where he settled with wife Mary and it is still nearby to where I live today. It was named after them.
I am also going to start a new post in case it helps more people to notice this.
