Slaters menswear

Started by: mark1 (6)

I used to work at Slaters menswear in Makinson Arcade between 1980-1982. I had a holiday/saturday job and recall various people like Sandra Blackledge ( lovely girl who i had a soft spot for!), margaret and her daughter karen, Mike, Christine, John ( who married karen), Steven (who i think joined the police) Elaine, Julie, Mr Herbert ( manager who'd been there years!), Joan and Mark2 ( I was there before him hence the name mark 1!)
I've lived in York for last 16 years but would love to hear/or know how everybody is keeping.
It would be great if anybody could update me on how they are keeping these days or even if they got in touch.
Thanks
Mark1

Hi Mark, Christine here. Slaters closed down all of their shops and opened 1 big one, which is in Eckersleys Mill. Billy and Steven are still at the helm and their manageress is Sharon Havard although she is married now. Karen and John married had three (I think) children, although they have been divorced for some time. Mike Hallam got engaged to Sheryl but sadly this also came to an end whilst sheryl was living in Farnworth. The last I heard of Mike, he was running a Piza shop in Hindley. Barbara and Graham also married and the last I heard of them, they were running an import business and living on old pepper lane in standish! If I remember any more I'll try and update later.

A quick update Mark, Julie (Edwards) divorced her Ken from Beech Hill and married someone who lived in Goose Green. The last time I saw her she was working for Galloways but she has left there now. Ther last bit of news I heard about Elaine was that her sister (who used to live with her, has now passed away.La st but never least Joan has sadly passed away also (of cancer I think) Hope you are well and enjoying your life in York.

Christine
what a lovely surprise to get your mail,
thanks for the reply...i've not checked this site for ages so not seen your replies. Thanks for sending them. Good to hear about some of the names of old...soemtimes it seems like yesterday then i realise it's about 25 years since I started at slaters. Talk about time flying! Do you ever see any of the people from slaters?
Whilst i still pop home to wigan every now and then it's probably not as often as it could be. My kids, 16 and 8, have have grown up in york and it's home to them, therefore wigan doesn't have the same attraction for them as me!
if you see anybody i know tell them i said hello!
take care
mark
