It's a long time since I was in touch with you but I've lived in Ince from birth and am now nearly 80, my question is what does the bar in Ince bar stand for

Probably an old toll booth and barrier

Hello Aitch, like you I am from Ince and I have always taken it to refer to when there was a toll bar that you had to pay to go through at the crossroads of Belle Green Lane, Ince Green Lane and through Manchester Road.Long before our time.

The only Tollbar I can remember is the one in Hindley, and thank you for all the welcomes it's been a while

Been awhile since I've been on, but it is so nice to see a post from you, Aitch!

It was originally a toll-road, Aitch, and vehicles had to pay for the bar to be lifted so they could go through. There is still a toll-bar on Warburton Bridge near Lymm. We go across often. It is 12p one way or 25p for a day-pass. x.

rbilly, aitch used to mate with my brother when they were young men. My brother sadly died last month and I sent aitch a facebook message to tell him but got no reply. I don't know any other way to contact him.
