LOOKING FOR SUE (MAIDEN NAME O'LAUGHLIN) WHO IS MARRIED TO STAN, SHE WENT TO THE CONVENT AND HAS 2 SISTERS, ANNE AND SHEILA. SUE AND STAN USED TO GO INTO THE MARKET HOTEL AND THE PARK HOTEL, I KNOW THAT THEY LIVE IN WIGAN STILL AND I AM REALLY WANTING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THEM, I USED TO GO TO SCHOOL WITH SUE. SHE WILL BE 52 THIS YEAR AND STAN WHO WAS A BRICK LAYER IS JUST A LITTLE OLDER. MY BOYFRIEND AT THE TIME WAS CYRIL PARKINSON AND HE USED TO PLAY GUITAR WITH A GUY CALLED PADDY, THEY BOTH WENT TO WIGAN BOYS GRAMMER, CYRIL HAD A SISTER NAMED HILLARY OR H, AS SHE WAS NICKNAMED AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT SHE IS NOW MANAGING A BOOKIES SOMEWHERE IN WIGAN, IF ANYONE REMEMBERS ANY OF THESE PEOPLE OR KNOWS WHERE THEY ARE NOW PLEASE LET ME KNOW. MY NAME IN THOSE DAYS WAS DEBORAH RYLANCE AND SUE AND I WERE IN TOWNLEY AT THE CONVENT.

Come on you lot, there must be loads of old hippies who went into the Market Hotel and the Park Hotel someone must remember Sue or Stan. Please help, I really need to contact her.

there must have been about 20 or so people who were in "our group" as it were, and I can't remember a Kev, but here are some names I do remember, Jaz, Eileen, Roger, Cliff Duxbury, Phil, Paul Trainer, Howard, all the lads had long hair of course except for Jaz some of these people lived in Canal Row at Red Rock, I had a cottage up there and in Summer it was hippy heaven. Sue/susan and Stan didn't live up there, I think they have always lived in Wigan.

ok I know Jaz - as in tailor with a dog - saw him the other day . . . Eileen, blonde hair, lived in Heather Grove? Paul Trainer deffo, knew a load from Canal Row . . . I MUST know you. . . do you remember Ratz at all from the John Bull?

daghda spoke to sue`s brother-in-law last night told him to let stan know you are looking for her, either she will get in touch or maybe relay a message through myself. junerose it is stan mapson he lives up near the infirmary, not seen malc mac for about five years.

Blimey all that Market Hotel life, it seems like a hundred years ago, happy days! Now that I think of it I think I had a crush on Paul Makinder and now I can only vaguely remembr what he looks like.

Does anyone remember Cyril Parkinson, he was a lovely chap, sadly he died about 15 years ago but as I said he did play gutar occasionally at the Park Hotel. Does anyone remember "the Fag", hippy and biker club, but the bikers had no bikes - hilarious - but they did all share a house somewhere near gidlow lane, I think, and the living room was full of bits of bikes!

Does anyone know what Sue does? Does Stan still work in the building trade?

Petal, Petal, a story has just popped into my head about Petal. Petal drank some battery acid and died. Is that true or is my memory playing tricks, also I seem to remember something about Petal and the Carnegie Library in Pemberton, did he do something there or did he colapse there, I seem to also remember being at a party somewhere and Petal downing all manner of pills and being very very ill. Does any of that ring a bell, do you remember me?

we ought to have some kind of over fifties market/park hotel ex patriots re-union. I think it would be hilarious. Over fifty... sounds mental doesn't it.

I just saw your photo Ian McLoughlin and I recognised you but can't place how I know you, but I suppose we all went into the same pubs so we must have seen each other especially if you were up at canal row.

Wow, Petal and battery acid, it is true then...I can remember what he looked like and he often wore an old combat jacket. there was another guy in this group of hippies who died, I think his name was Fred, he was a bit older than me possibly a friend of Malc Makinder's, anyhow I think he died of an overdose.

Remember seeing Petal in the cafe on the top of Great Orme,Llandudno. Surprisingly he was off his head at the time!

I was a regular at the Park & Market in the mid 70s.I think Petal actually drank anti-freeze not battery acid.

It was Fred Jacobs that died , he was with Sandy who died a few years later (overdoses of course) We had some good times up at Eccleston Delph. Still looking for Paul Mackinder if anyone can help .

Sorry to hear about Paul, junerose, not seen him in years but saw Malc in Asda a couple of weeks ago.

Pauls funeral 11am at Wigan Crematorium on Friday 14th February if anyone out there would like to be there.

There was only a few at Paul's funeral, his family inc brother Malc and me and 2 others from the old Market days. He very much lived his own life, it appeared from what was said, living in a forest for several years at one time. We said goodbye as "Desperado" played. He dropped off the radar a long time ago (probably in his forest)but I had a soft spot for the smartly dressed guy who looked like a young Bob Geldoff, he was one of ours when we were all just kids with fairydust in our eyes. RIP old friend.

Petal, that name is a blast from the past, he would walk or should that be float from Upholland to Wigan.

Didn't Sue and Stan hang around the Market and Park with the Regan's i.e. Pauline, Angela and Elaine, and I remember Frank Mapson too and also Jim ? who was then a postman and is now a social worker.

Jim Bolton , he's retired now but still knocking about, I see him quite often around town.

I remember that Bronach the police were informed from a grass that they'd bought substances from the "Market" but the policeman misheard and thought they'd said "Markey" , so he was arrested ,roughed up and thrown in the nick for a night. Disgruntled after his release ,John sought his revenge and threw a crude home made bomb into the cop shop.It didn't cause any damage but he was duly arrested and spent a short time at her majesty's.

I got the story from John himself but I may have got details wrong-its a long time ago.

So many of them gone UTT, In the late 80s John went to University in Bangor, or maybe Swansea, as a mature student , he called to see us at .Christmas and we went on to the Hen 'ole for a few pints.
Never was him again, he died back at Uni in the new year. So sad as he was really trying to make some sense of his life.

I haven't seen Stan Mapson for a while. Always a unique sense of humour. A few years ago I met him at the hospital - it turned out we were both being treated for the same type of cancer - follicular lymphoma. Last time we spoke he was in remission. Mine came back but I'm back in remission again. Stan was a builder, but I guess he might have retired as he's a bit older than me (I'm nearly 68 but still working). Sue got a law degree, but I believe she worked in Social Services. They bought a nice house somewhere behind the Bellingham.
Many names that I too remember. I see 'Jolly Jim' Bolton frequently. Haven't seen Jazz or Malc in a while. I used to hang about with Custer (Tony Meadows) and Toshack (Chris Ashcroft). Most people knew me as Dylan back then. I later hung about with Paul McKinder, Walt Tolley, Daffy and Alan Grimes to mention just a few. I always thought Petal died from drinking WD40; I know that he regularly drank mentholated spirits. He ran out of money one afternoon in the Market; he then offered to do a streak along Mesnes Street for some beer money. The Market was the main hippy meeting place; the Park was popular too. I loved a short visit to the Market followed by a good night at the Students Union (old Swinley labour Club). It was always a good night at the FAG, upstairs in the Swan and Railway. Another name here - Merlin from Pemberton. He did a gig one night at the FAG. As for bikers, I remember Pete (don't know the surname) telling me he was getting married. They married in the church near the Park Hotel (later demolished). The bride arrived in a sidecar made of orange box wood. Hells Angels from all over came to the wedding. The headline in the newspaper was 'Wedding Bells Bring Angels'.
Good days - doesn't seem so long ago. Life moves fast.

Quick update - I bumped into 'mad' Jack the Sailor on Saturday. Haven't seen him for years!

Stan Mapson would be around 73 I think. He used to go to Rigby's Farm in Abram in the mid 60's with his brother Ken who sadly passed away a while ago.
