I remember Mr Molyneux who taught Woodwork when I was there and I also remember Mr Wright who taught RE, Oh and just thought on Mr Forster think he taught French x

I still see Mick Grey (Chemistry)and Mrs Jolley (French); also used to see Colin Taylor (French)and last week saw Dickie Dykes!!!

A while ago I went to pick up a friend's granddaughter from Mabs Cross and the teacher was Janet Hignet (nee Green) and she remembered me!!!

Actually I think Griplip was Mr Hilton - poor old chap had had a stroke I think! Mr Smith had come over from Pemberton I believe, he came into the hall one lunchtime when I was playing the piano and asked if he could have a go: the music was " Dead Babies" by Alice Cooper!!!

I left in 75 remember Merriman (gaffer) well but Jack Sherrat was the worst if you got sent to him it was four before he asked you why you were sent to him and another 2 if he didnt like what you had done

does anybody remember bill bradbury. (biscuit bill he was know as !)the best teacher in the school! and paddy burns the maths teacher, boy did i hate him ! My first form teacher was a french teacher called mr faugier, it might be spelt wrong. arsne wenger reminds me of him. and bioghraphy teacher bill gapes. who always wore a dead cat on his head !

Bill Bradbury lived in the row of houses after Pemb Caravans near to Pemberton Station - I was a friend of his daughter Carol.

As for dear old Regis Fougier - he was fantastic! " I reaaly mean this now!" . . . the only Paddy I can remember was Gore - art.

I once opened the door near the lecture room for Jack Sharratt as he was walking along a corridor - I then closed it and trapped his dog in it!!!

Did the art teacher used to be called Miss Witherington? I think she was a hippy x

yep, The Art Dept was headed up by FAL - Frank Leyland, a lovely bloke - and included the very lovely and bizarre Moira Withington - I was a hippy too and so thought she was great!

There was also, later on, a guy from Canal Cottages Red Rock who always wore a turquoise corduroy suit! knew him really well but just cannot think of his name! Larry? maybe . . . he was often on another planet - sometimes literally! I once watched him roll a very large tin of dog food along the upper corridor . .. it went past me and as he walked by me to pick it up he just smiled and said " Cool sound!"

going back to bill bradbury. in our last year ,i picked canoeing as a sport. guess what ! the school had none !
so every 2 weeks he would drop about 10 of us of at the bottom of parbold hill and make us walk back ! to wigan

Billy Gapes: used to use a megaphone at sports days - made his voice quieter!

Robinson - he was PE and v weird; always used to check that we were NOT wearing underpants! Believe he was killed in a car crash in the US - hope so or I'm going to be sued!

Albert Wright: Latin and RE: ok except for the ever tightening tie knot 'til you turned blue!

Jim Ainsworth: Chemistry and my form teacher - now THIS one is THE one responsible for the last 30 years of pain . . . if knew where he was I would make sure he knew! Stupid sadistic and a crap teacher!

There are many more and all have ruined an entire generation of people . .

I remember Mrs Gillespie teaching Geography and she had a funny eye, she used to get called Jelly Eye, she was a right battleaxe x

Aww! Mrs Gillespie was sweet! Yes mr Johnson took me for Latin - he had 2 suits ; I used to call them his winter and summer plumage!

he taught me classical studies, int bloody clock tower ian , think i f i remember right the whole class consisted of 6 of us and yup he did have two suits. cant say i remember a teacher called gillespie though

You said you still see Mrs.Jolley,she was the only decent French teacher I ever knew.She seemed quite old but she praps wasn't if she's still around today.Is she ok?
I left in 1973 and some teachers I remember are Mrs Makin,Jack Waz (Physics),Jasper who I delivered mail to as a postman in a previous,Paddy Gore,Taffy,Brian Boardman,FALeyland,Mr.Cooper(Tommy),Jack Shat,Mr.Holt,John Holland & Frank Taylor(both regulars in Beech Hill bookies these days)Gem Hall,Billy Gapes(little Hitler),Grip Lip who loved to slap faces,(Mike) Hailwood and his wife,Mr.Armstrong,Mr.Jones(biology)and of course Bill Merriman shortly before he died about 10 years ago.

Jude my form teacher was Jim Ainsworth - truly hated him. Obv remember you and margie very well . . . was there a girl you knew called Joan? and a very tall girl with floppy black hair? God it seems a million years ago doesn't it!

Bennie: yep still see Mrs Jolley; she comes to WLT the same night as Mick Gray, she seems ok.

That list of names caused waves of remembrance; esp Christine Makin! I think we were all in love or at least lust with her - didn't she leave to become an air hostess?
Cec Cooper was a really nice guy wasn't he,a real gentleman. John Holland still see him around odd times, was Frank Taylor Tech Drawing? and Jasper Melling - metal work - poor sod was always being locked in his cupboard as I recall!

Legend has it that Jasper was locked in the metal cupboard one Friday and remained there till Monday morning.I know for a fact that he was set on fire by bullies in my year.
It was also said that Jasper was a former boxing champion but suffered a nervous breakdown and lost control of the pupils after this.
In the 1980s I delivered post to him in Shevington and found him to be a really nice bloke.

mr johnston (latin teacher) greasy hair, diry looking thing, looked like he could do with a good scrub. i always thought he was pervy, so i gave up latin (not that i found it too hard of course!!!!)

Frank Taylor and Paddy Gore ended up teaching at Whitley when I was there 1972/1975.

Ian, Yes you are correct, Robinson got killed in a car crash in the U.S.A. He lived in Adlington. Gapes and Robinson, were teachers at the Thomas Linacre before it merged with the Grammar School.( A sad day) Gapes took Geography and as you said, Robinson was the P.E. teacher.

i left in 81.best school days and best mates ever.i remember our physics group flooding the classroom and most of the corridor.i was dragged out of chemistry to face the music,funny as hell seeing the class sat on the tables.andy watkinson did it cos he wanted a drink,the tap head fell off and it woulnt turn off so we scarpered.dave greenhalgh dobbed him in.my best mates were paul bishop,michael fitzgerald,paul saxon,mark connelly lots of others

I was there from 1970 to 1977. First two years as the WGS after that MHS. To this day I still say I went to WGS since I had passed my eleven plus.
Played on the 1st XV at rugby and the 1st XI at cricket.
Amongst those there, some of who I still see, were Phil Gough retired policeman see him regularly at rugby ,Mick Kearns retired teacher not seen for couple of years. Peter Layland worked for council and his older brother David was with one of the banks, Phil Charnock and his wife Gwen had their own photography business. Paul Rutter couple years above us but see him regular at golf club retired policeman his son ended up working with me for a few years. Simon Bennett went working and living in USA never came back, goughie keeps in touch. Ian chip Jeffrey played rugby for Lancashire and League for Leigh, used to play cricket at WCC with him and the Leylands

Sam Tarbuck - economics. Spent all time on parents evening talking to my dad about their days at WGS both there at same time.
Geoff (dicky) Dykes - history and form master. Still see him at rugby matches. Used to take rugby and once drop kicked ball down corridor into classroom.
Bernard (dilly) Stock - Latin organised train trips then disappeared to pub
Dave Johnson - Latin
Bill Gapes - xxxxhouse -geography. Used to barge in 6th form common room as though he owned the place. If you weren’t keen on geography automatically put you in cse group.
Jem Hall - geography. Dished punishment out with chair leg called Clarence and gym pump called Rupert
