slaughter houses

anyone know the name of the slaughter house near spring street scholes also anyone heard of john adams from silver street scholes

hi lived faceing the slaughter house in hardybutts cant remember what it was called,will try and find out

thanks i have been trying for ages to find anything out about the place

My mopther in law says the slaughterhouse was Ben Turners,the butcher,
She also says there was another in Boyswell Rd,were the flats are now,but that shut a while before Turners
Do you think this info is right ?

Kenny it was the other way round Ben Turners was near to where Boswell house is now. The one in Hardybutts was where the bungalows are now near the top of Spring St

I dont know what age group you fall into,and I'm not asking,but my ma in law says her husband grew up around Silver St.sadly he is no longer with us,his name was Tom Glover,did you know him

The slaughter house was in Hardybutts round the corner was Silver Street..Spring Street was further down where the bungalows are.

i have been trying to do my familytree and i have Adams and Collins both familys came from scholes John Adams listed as master butcher he lived in Silver Street all is lfe died 1950s

lynnm i was born in silver st my mam is 83 and she was born there i will ask ere 2morrow if she knew john adams

I Lynnm I am now 63 years old and used to live in Neville st off Schofield lane and used to go down to the slauterhouse every Saturday morning to clean out all the slauter rooms hell of a mucky job but we always was given a joint of meat when everything was clean and tidy , one of the memorys that I still recall , was that a cow was running wild in the yard and a bald headed rough looking slauter man stuck a pitch fork into its head and that brought the animal to its end , cant remember is name thou. very happy days

Badger heard the same story seems John Adams was called on when the animals escaped said he was ruthles love to find anything out about the family

my mam said it was defently mccavoys and my mum new the adams as my mum was born in silver st and lived there till the houses was pulled down

Ben Turner's slaughter house was up a cobbled alleyway on the right as you go up Scholes. I worked there a couple of times during my school holidays. My dad worked for Ben Turner at the Worsley Mesnes shop, opposite to Russ's barber's shop. McAvoy's also had a slaughter house in the Scholes area, on the right, I think

the slaughterhouse in scholes was wilson & boardmans but aparently there was a couple of slaughter houses in scholes my hubby used to work at fosters at what was at the back of c & a its now a car park and he also worked at scrivens were the bus station is now it used to stink round there especially in summer ugh!! i think scrivens was owned by kings... julie

The one at the back of "c&a" - ie at the back of the Roebuck pub ( now McDonald's) was Mark Williams' wasn't it?

When I lived in Wrightington Street in the late 60s early 1970s our dog,Tinker, would often disappear,one day she was missing for ages and we eventually found her lurking at the slaughter house at the back of C&As.
Those were the days when you let the dog out of the house to go walk themselves.

Hi janmci, yes mark williams was there as well hubby also worked there, but jj fosters was were the multistorey car park is now at the back of c & a i think its aprox 20 years ago it was pulled down. my hubby was alus coming home with something out of c & a skips clothes rails mirrors you name it god knows why?? julie x

Fosters was in Water Street just passed St Georges Church.

When I was a wee lad - about 4 or 5, used to go with my dad to the cattle market on Mondays; used to see all the butchers there - Jimmy Strange, Ben Turner and was it Noel Chadwick?

Was nearly killed by a runaway cow once - think I've told the tale elsewhere on here and my grandad once was walking a cow down Prescott St and it got scared and ran into a woman's house and jumped on her settee ruining it! lol!

yeh thats right copperhead i couldnt think of the street,..water st there used to be a few slaughter houses in wigan eh now i think there is only blackledges in warrington rd and chadwicks in standish my hubby has done them all i think

Yes, it was the McAvoys slaughter house as it was my Grandad, Earnest, who owned it. The McAvoy 'empire' is still going strong with our family market stall.

hi kath, mcavoys was in schole's it was jj fosters in water st it used to belong to george walsh he took fosters over some years ago, Jimmy peet ran the stall in the market he married mc avoys daughter. but the only slaughter houses down there was this and mark williams my hubby did quite a few years at both of them, he knows mc avoys very well..

Jimmy Peet (my uncle) married the youngest daughter, Sheila, who is the sister of my mum Patricia (now aged 77)Jims' son, my cousin,David now runs the stall, as Uncle Jim is in poor health. My great Grandad actually started the slaughter house in Hardybutts a million years ago, his name was also Earnest. The three McAvoy sisters are still going strong the eldest, Aileen being 86. Trust me, Julie, I am right. I phoned my Mum to verify the details. It was in Hardybutts.

Hi kath, you may be right, going back so far,I know mc avoys are still going strong my hubby knows them well, it was only about 20/25 years ago when fosters was at the back of c & a I think my hubby did about 10 years for jj fosters but mark williams he went there from school,about38 years ago there is a lad works for mc avoys from lower ground and i have forgot his name??? and its bugging me now..you loose track of all the different butchers that have been.. not so many now eh!! i think there is only 2 slaughter houses left in wigan as i know of thats blackledges goose green and chadwicks standish cheers!!

John Adams is my Great Grandad who lived on Silver Street, just spent bank hol weekend visiting Wigan with my 2 Aunts and a cousin, gutted to find its no longer there. Would love to catch up more on the history and family connection.

Kathryn, were the McAvoys you talk about related to the Ronnie McEvoy who used to have a butcher's shop in Victoria Street Newtown? His mother used to to bake pies and cakes and sell them in the shop.

I worked for Ernie Mac in 1961 in the old market hall. Jimmy was my immediate boss and I trained under Jerry Burgess.
I was 16 years old and Mr Mac used to take me to Yorkshire occasionally on a Sunday to visit an old farmer friend of his and I used to go fishing in the River Wharfe nearby.

What a life back then...sorry to hear about Jimmy being in poor health.

As regards to the slaughterhouse in Scholes, I had a cine camera and still have some cine film of the slaughterhouse, in colour. I remember getting lamb fries from the slaughter men and thoroughly enjoyed eating them.

Hi Fred, it would be great to have been able to see the cine film you have, do you know what year was it filmed and who might be on it?

I shot the film when I was around 16 so that would be in 1962 and it shows cattle being killed by the slaughter men. I knew them all but can't remember their names now. I may try to get it transferred to a dvd.

The slaughterhouse name was Jimmy Strange, I believe, and they moved from Scholes to Warrington Rd area or Newtown, again, I believe but would need to check.

Thanks Fred, My great grandad was John Adams, and his son was also John ( Jack ) Adams, my Grandad who married Irene known as Renee so some, they moved to Wilfred Street. who is mentioned a few times and they lived there at the time of the cine filming.Trying desperately to get in touch with Lynnm and baby123 but its been so long since they been on here now.

Stranges Slaughterhouse moved to Stephens way, the industrial estate between Skew Bridge & Goose Green. That was the late 60's early 70's..

My brother Robert worked at Wilson and Boardmans slaughter house I remember him bringing heart and tongues home for my mum to cook

Watching the livestock being herded into the slaughterhouse at James Strange was one of our fave pastimes as kids around Stephens Way. A few 'escapees' over the years

Didn't appreciate the awful 'death' smell though, the residents of Warrington Rd. argued with Strange and the Council for years without success. It was finally sorted after the place shut down.

I don't know what it was called my hubby is on google as we speak ha all I know is me and my friend allways ran past it as you could see dead cows and that and it stunk mons height ewwww .
