My great grandfather and his family lived there until he died in 1933. It was subsequently lived in by the family of my great grandfather's brother. No one connected to my family owned Wingates - it was rented. This is a quote from a rather distant relative who has looked into this:

"In 1948, The Earl of Crawford and Balcarres decided to sell his entire estate and all the properties were to be auctioned. Wingates was of course part of the estate."

It used to be a part of the Haigh Hall estate but I don't know that it had any purpose other than as a residential property.

This is what Wingates looked like when my great grandfather lived there:

I think the picture was taken in the 1920s.

Hello Joe,

there was a John Joseph Gormally who was the son of my great grandfather, John Gormally. I think John Joseph Gormally was born around 1889, but I don't know who he married. He was a younger brother of my grandfather who was Thomas Gormally. Both would have lived at Bellingham Farm and later at Wingates House in the early part of the 20th century. This John Joseph Gormally was known within the family as "Big John" and, in his later years, he lived somewhere down Gidlow Lane.

Both my great grandfather, John Gormally, and his brother, Peter Gormally, had some involvement with Top Place Iron works close to Top Lock, Aspull. Some of their sons were also employed at the iron works for a while. My great grandfather's connection with Top Place would have been around the beginning of the 20th century.

When I was Two/three years old, I lived at Wingates House.

Alas, we were resident in the servants' annex, not the big house.

I think I recall my late parents tell me the name of the person who then lived in the big house was Bill Lowe.
