154 Upholland Road, Billinge

Started by: jilly (18)

My Greatgrandfather Enoch Walker died at 154 Upholland Road in 1935 although he lived in Ince. My research shows other family members have died at the same address even though they too lived elsewhere. Can anybody tell me if this was the address of the old Billinge Hospital?

I was born @ this address in 1939, according to my birth cert. which my mum said it was Billinge Hospital! At the time, my mum and dad were living @ 14, York StEast, off Gt george St,Wallgate. 154 is the 1st terraced house on the left, past the start of Longshaw Old Rd.50yds b4 the Hare and Hounds,3 or 400yds after Billinge Hospital itself. I wondered if this row of terraces were used as annexes by the original hospital. Anyone any ideas?

> dodger, I can only assume, that the terraced house that has the no. 154 has pinched it when the 'hospital' adopted the address:- BILLINGE HOSPITAL, as its official title. any ideas?

The entrance to Billinge hospital used to be round the back, perhaps it was at the side of number 154 once, thats all I can think.

Can't see it being a rear access road, because Longshaw Old Road Is nearer to the hospital, and 154 is quite a distance from the nearest part of the hospital, which is also the oldest part of the building. The distance from 154 is comparable to the distance from the Pier to Wallgate rail station. The only rear entrance I know of was from the other side of the hospital, accessed from Tracks Lane

The entrance off Tracks Lane was for deliveries,eg: the laundry,(serving all the local hospitals) pharmacy, goods, etc..
The hospital itself started life as a "poor law infirmary" way back when..

It may have been the old Pemberton Cottage Hospital on Billinge Road, Pemberton between Victoria Street and Tunstall Lane now known as The Spinney? A Scarlett Fever/TB hospital among other illnesses. Billinge Hospital was on Upholland Road, Billinge.

It would be the address of the registrar's office.

When we registered our sons at Billinge there was a small building just to the right of the main gate to the hospital.
