a ginnel is an entry.......could it not be "squeeze belly entry" your referring to?A narrow entry between the shops.

'Middle Ginnel' is marked on Old Maps. It shows it as being off Heath Lane (now Heath Road) towards Gerrard Street and directly opposite the Golden Lion public house, round about the site of Kwik Save (Somerfield). If you want to look on Old Maps, you will have to search for Haydock, then go north and east until you come to Ashton, as Ashton in Makerfield isn't listed.

Tonker
That ginnel has the steps leading to the open market and could be the one, or look at almost direct across the road
and a ginnel running through to heath road about a metre wide is the one I thought it was

Yes John, the one called, and still called, 'A Court', is 'Squeeze Belly Entry'. That's it's local nickname anyway. I can imagine there being three entries, or ginnels, linking Gerard Street with Heath Lane (Road), Squeeze Belly Entry at the top, another at the bottom and one in the middle called 'Middle Ginnel'? It certainly seems to be a 'formal title' anyway, seeing as it's on an OS map. Weren't we a old fashioned lot, though, in the 'olden days'. Fancy calling a road a 'ginnel' or an 'entry'! We're so advanced these days, what, calling our roads things like 'Aspenwood', 'The Parchments', 'Woodedge' and 'Oakenfields'. Ooooops, sorry, I nearly pi***d myself laughing there!

I think he means Cromptons Ferdy, I remember seeing an old photo of Gerard St before Cromptons was built & there were 2 old cottages by the side of the Red Lion (Old Mary's)

Cheers Tonker, found it, ended up going via Bryn though as struggled with the Haydock route, but thanks as had been unable to locate it. Em
