New houses off frog lane

I was driving around frog lane area today and was shocked to see how many houses have been built on what was the old wigan cattle market ,and round by the closed pub " the guardians " then i drove round the back of HEY STREET as i say i was shocked at the number of new homes there ,for i remember it has old terrace housing ,and J.MORRIS 'S BUTCHERS YARD later a cold storage warehouse i was wondering has anyone else memories of that area .?

When I moved in the area cattle market was thriving as was Brian & John's meat warehouse, they had trucks coming from Ireland on a regular basis, also Regentruck was very busy, had many a pint in Guardians to it had 8 tenants up to it closing, colliers arms was good pub as well live entertainment at weekends, pear tree and tudor was busy as well and the chippy facing school, the great British invention lovely grub from there, frog lane was good in it's heyday.

Do you remember the large-chested lady who used to run the Guardians, early to mid-80's?

I sure do her name is Jean she lives on gidlow Lane now, sadly her eldest son got killed recently whilst working on railway.

That's the one, Jean! I had a couple of houses there, in the 80's and the shop on the corner, 49 Frog Lane (hair salon), she used to come for her hair done a couple of times a week.

I don't remember a lot of the people round there, but she sticks in my mind! John Oscaklevich too. He lives opposite the Colliers up Aspull now. Ironically, his lad was killedon the railway too!

I remember the shop it was called pats place at one time, then a guy named Jimmy had it now it's been converted to a house.

It was called "Debonair" from '80 to '88. I sold it to a bloke from near Peter's chippy, who sold guitars.
Then it was converted to 2 houses.
It was number 49 Frog Lane and 2a Upper St. Stephens Street. , it's now 2a and 2b Upper St. Stephens Street.

Sorry tonker I missed the frog lane bit, I was thinking of shop at other end of upper st stephen, I remember hairdressers then guitar shop,also all people there on frog lane.

I think it was Beryl and Sid next door. Most were nice people.
They're well built houses. That one was haunted!

You're neighbours would of been Lillian & Stan and Anne & Ronnie and Fred Aspey, I think Beryl & Ken lived in end house.

Hello bambam, You mention brian & john do you mean brian morris and was john his son? if so its a small world i worked for brian and used to sometimes take of john he used to have a pony called "toby" in the butchers yard off hey st there was a john bennet lived in field st he was a member of darts team colliers /pear tree brians brother colin used to run the shop on 136 frog lane i used to be with john bennet on the mobile vans we went out hawking Tuesday/friday/saturday's other days i was boning out in the yard do you know the jones from HEY ST ? the lad IAN we worked together they were happy days , then IAN left for Hienzs later i left went to taylors carpets in miry lane nice talking to you bambam. stay safe G.B.

bambam, Correct! It WAS Lilly and Stan! I remember Lilly like I remember Jean, an imprint on t'mind!
Lilly had a very loud voice and red lips!

That shop at 49 Frog Lane, was it once a Sandwich Shop ?

Hi GB, yes it was Brian morris I had many a pint with him and John as guardians was their local at the time, I feel I should know john bennett as I spent a lot of time in colliers and pear tree,i will probably recognise the face, it was great back then GB lots of good memories.

yes tonker Lillian is quite a rum girl, she has never changed still exactly the same she has a walk up wigan everyday, sadly though stan died a few years ago.

When you mention John that his son is it?? he did have daughter Angela i think also the gurdians pub back then was run by POLY do you recall her , I can see the pub now in my mind in winter ther used to be a coal fire and Ian and i would pop in at dinner time for a pint of

Hi GB, poly might of been afore my time I remember Ralph & Mary then Tommy & Jean, yes john was Brians son, in later life he let john run the business, sadly Brian died many years ago since that john has had two big pubs in wigan which he ran with his son.

IS he still run the pubs if so what were they ?

Hi GB, he had the victoria in wallgate for years but think he sold that, and the Charles Dickens in swinley not sure if he's still there or not, he also had a business in shevvy or appley bridge which his ex misses was running, but aint seen him in a while so not sure what he;s upto these days.
