Ashton Carnival

Anyone remember it? Why was it stopped.
It used to be a fantastic day out us kids loved it.Happy days
It used to get the community together, wish it could be brought back.

Empress, most towns had a carnival.I wonder what happened for them all to disappear. What a shame.
I know Golborne still has a carnival in May.

Can you imagine the regulations thesedays though, with all the health and safety, would they actually allow kids to stand on lorries while they are moving ? Worlds gone regulations mad.

I remember it really well. My nanna lived in Ashton-in-M and I looked forward to the carnival every year. I particularly remember all the morris dancing troups and all those leading girls with loads of medals pinned across their chests! The floats had different themes. The huge shire horses would always make an appearance, pulling the beer barrel cart (Watney's Red Label??). It was a very colourful spectacle. It is a shame that the "community" feel has pretty much died out countrywide. My local village has a special day each year with side stalls and a few fairground rides but not a patch on Ashton Carnival which was like a small scale Notting Hill!

I think it is the safety factor, no one will give insurance against anyone getting hurt,
