Vets

Started by: Billinge Biker (3087)

Had loads of animals in my past..didn't pay any pet insurance as I opted for...if they are ill I will take them to the vets. My lad has a Patterdale terrier 3yrs old...very friendly with humans but he can't abide anything else from a fly to a horse. He had his gonads off 2yrs ago and it hasn't made much difference...he still wants a do with anything. T'other day I had him at my house for the day as I try to do at least one day a week to help the lad out and give the dog a change of scenery and walk up nearby fields...anyway next door has a yapping machine and the lads dog is dying for a do with it...but never managed it. He bounces like a rubber flea and goes berserk at the fencing (If I know the yapper is out I keep our dog in) but stupid neighbour doesn't give a ****. Anyway whilst bouncing like a Tasmanian devil t'other day he snagged one of his dew claws...it became inflamed and a bit painful...today at the vets the lad was relieved of £80....£30 for consultation and £50 for antibiotic cream and anti inflammatory tablets...he was in less than 2 minutes...the dog is insured etc..but the lad can only apply for a claim when treatment is complete....probably have to pay the first £100 excess anyway....what a laugh and legalised thieving in this day and age. Rant over.

£50 for anti-biotic cream is tacking the piss! In the same way as pharmacists are when they charge £9.90 per prescribed item, some of which should be available over the counter for less than £1.

Billinge Biker my little un is an awful yapper and likewise doesn’t like other animals, this afternoon he got out to the front and started barking like a mad man at everything and everyone..like you say he gets on with folk but not when he sees them walking passed the gate…right now he’s at my feet but I haven’t the patience with him..no doubt I’ll give in…and yes I totally agree re the costs ..some years ago my Mam had one of my dogs puppies,he hadn’t been well and we took him to the Vets..gave my mam two tablets at a cost of £5-00. I looked at the stamped mark on them ..Panadol..and this was in 1972.

£50, for an anti-biotic pet cream is being rinsed, good style

I was once advised, years ago to use Sudocrem for pet treatment similar to the above case, and other minor pet cuts.

I used it for years with very good results.
You can purchase a small tub from your local Superdrug for not much more than £3.

“50, for an anti-biotic pet cream is being rinsed, good style”

I’ve just rinsed 4 pairs of socks and 4 pairs of underpants what I washed earlier and left soaking in t’bucket. I’ve hung them on the line and they’ll be dry in the morning!

I agree, vets’ fees are exorbitant, but let me tell you a story about one vet in particular. I’m afraid it’s a long story, but I’ll condense it as best I can.

It was one hot July night in 2006 when we were in bed, and we heard what we believed was a kitten howling outside. It kept on for ages and we couldn’t leave it, so we got up and saw a tiny kitten rolling around on the ground. We tried to pick it up but it kept rolling out of our way, so much to the point it rolled under a car so we couldn’t get it, so we went back to bed.

The next morning when I got up to go to work, I went out to my car and saw a black furry blob asleep on the pavement, so I went over to it. It was the same kitten we’d seen the night before and other people must have walked past it and paid it no attention, so I picked him up and put him in the kitchen with some water. I left a note for my partner to watch out for him if he got home before me.

Bear in mind we had six other cats at the time, but they were off gallivanting for the day, so no harm could come to the little one.

Cutting a long story short, we took him to the vet the next day where he was assessed by a very nice vet. The kitten had obviously been discarded by its mother shortly after birth because he was disabled, and she’d probably carried him from wherever she lived to fend for himself outside, and the vet told us he was no older than six weeks. Kitty was very lethargic, probably through lack of food, and his back legs didn’t work, possibly from some sort of neurologic problem, and he told us the kitten would never walk, and he should be put to sleep, but we said no. He gave us some protein food to give the kitten and when we were leaving I asked what we owed him for the consultation and food. The vet looked at us sadly, shaking his head, and said “no charge.” I told the vet that this kitten WILL walk, if I have to spend 24 hours a day to treat him myself.

Every lunchtime I’d go home from work to feed him manually through a syringe and I’d massage his legs for him morning, afternoon and evening. All the other cats helped take care of him by letting him sleep with them. One lunchtime, a few weeks later, I got home and he greeted me by taking a few wobbly steps towards me with bright shiny eyes as if it say “look what I’ve done mummy.” I picked him up and sobbed my heart out, and he eventually learned to start eating by himself. Sadly, it wasn’t to last, as he died peacefully one night a week or so later, but what he did achieve in his short life was monumental.

I shared this story on a lovely forum I was on and posted pictures of him. We’d named him Ben.

You only see silly buggers and daft pensioners in vets, anybody else will use medication you can buy from a chemist to sort out their problems.

People just don’t realise the commitment of owning a pet. Not only the financial aspect of it.
They are a hinderance!

We had a problem with our Collie about a year ago and when we rang the vet, because it was out of hours they wanted £300 just to walk through the door just for the consultation.!!

We had trouble with foxes over here, so I shot ‘em. Cost about 80 cents each for the shots.

Unfortunately, as a pet owner, the onus is on the owner to take care of the animal in his/her care, and has to be prepared for the costs of a vet, but that £50 for antibiotic cream is very expensive. If it happens again, try
Germolene or Savlon which acts for us and, sadly, animals are experimented on to make things safe for us so, if it works on us, it will work on some animals as well. However, a chemist can't cure a broken leg, or an upper respiratory problem, etc, so a vet has to be called upon for help.

As I said earlier, the costs can be exorbitant, but this should be considered before buying an animal and, if you can't afford the vet fees, then don't buy the animal.

It's hard for some people to believe, but a dog or cat becomes part of the family and should be treated with the same care and respect you'd treat your children. Of course, some folk ^ who has never had a pet wouldn't appreciate or understand that simple logic.
