The eco brigade showed their true colours with the ton's of mess left behind, but that's ok someone else will clean it up

Errrr......not every festival go-er is in the `eco brigade` and I am sure the organisers have contingencies and budgets in place to deal with the aftermath.

I'M AFRAID IT WAS THE CASE OF THE 'EMPORERS NEW CLOTHES' BY MOST OF THE PEOPLE THERE.. FROM THE BITS I'VE SEEN, ON THE PERFORMANCES OF PAUL McCARTNEY AND DIANNA ROSS. THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN PAID UP AFTER 5 MINUTES, AT ANY OF THE LABOUR OR WORKINGMENS CLUBS AROUND WIGAN BACK IN THE DAY. NO DOUBT BARRY MANILOW WILL BE APPEARING NEXT YEAR????

My eldest lad and his Mrs went to the ‘Download’ festival, at Donington, a couple of weeks ago.
The week after, they were both ill, her worse than him.
Testing confirmed they’d both caught Covid19 !

Not into owt like that.... didnt watch a second of it.

SD did I say every festival go-er belonged to the Eco brigade Like BB I watched none of it except a very short clip of Diana Ross when I turned the Tv on and was waiting for the channel screen to come on

My recollections (others may have different perceptions)

It all began in the late 1960's when the tensions between performing artists and commerce reached crisis point, and the Stones elected to play for free in Hyde park in Summer of 1969. They said after tax, they would see nowt of the income from mass performances!

Many artists of this period were ripped off, some, of their entire earnings, eg Nina Simone.

Within weeks, the appearance of Bob Dylan at Isle of Wight transformed a local folk fest into a national event.

At the same time, Stateside, Woodstock Festival, boosted by the 'alternative' culture, and anti-Vietnam War protest was quite headline making.

So, the mass festivals had arrived, and the following year (1970) saw many. Glastonbury commenced 1970, and Reading the following year, with Leeds being a spin-off from the latter. Reading, actually being a take over of the National Jazz and Blues Fest, although the latter had not actually met at Reading.

These festivals, however were VERY, VERY commercial, which left dissatisfaction amongst many who had previously been involved.

The result was that many bands were willing to support for free the illegal festival in Windsor Great Park. (Free Festival) Commencing 1972.

This saw brutal melee of police and festival attenders: a harbinger of what was to be seen again in The Miner's Strike. It did uncover practices that the police tried to hide from public scrutiny. It was part of the nasty picture of London/Thames valley policing which led to Operation Countryman, and is still an issue today. (Death of Ian Tomlinson, 2009)

There is also the issue that definite proof existed that the illegal drugs seized by the police turned up again being sold on the street: never properly investigated.

The cultural split had been established, and is still with us.

What were called 'plastic hippies' or weekenders, are now the ( increasingly geriatric) old stick in the muds: they go to Glastonbury and suchlike.

The younger, progressive, less likely to be passive consumers of the music, but more likely to be users of MDMA (Ecstasy) have their illegal warehouse parties: called raves by outsiders.

You have to hand it to the Brits,
We are very good at creating and nurturing divisiveness in our society.

What did you think of Glastonbury

I am a big fan of live music and enjoyed what I saw on TV, particularly McCartneys set. However I doubt I would enjoy actually being at Glasto and dealing with everything it would involve but I am certainly not cynical of those who think otherwise. For some it will be an experience of a lifetime.

If nothing pops up in-between my next gig is Roxy music at Manchester arena in October

I enjoyed Noel Gallaghers group High Flying Birds but not his Oasis stuff.

I would agree with your comments, in that the only artist I enjoyed watching was Paul McCartney, and saying that apart from his Beatles stuff, which was good, his solo stuff, I have never really liked, apart from just a couple of songs, 'Live and Let Die' and 'Listen to What the Mon' said.

Other than that the acts were not for me, I have recorded Diana Ross, but not watched it yet, and I have always liked everything Diana Ross has ever done, but I thought that at the Jubilee Concert, she was poor, as regards admins comment about Emperor's New Clothes, and they would have been paid off in 5 minutes at the local Labour Club, I can sympathise with that remark and a long time ago in 1982 I watched Meatloaf at the NEC in Birmingham, and he was awful, he literally had no voice, and I wondered why the audience were clapping a cheering for him, I thought are yoo all bloody deaf or summat, because he cawn't sing, but saying that I always have liked Meatloaf, and I saw him again in 1983 and his voice was almost, but not completely back too normal

But as regards Paul McCartneys voice, it was quiet, he was in tune, but that show at Glastonbury was the last of 17 shows he has done in the last two months, an American tour, and one in Frome and the last one at Glastonbury, so he can probably still belt out the songs, but if he did that, how long would his voice last at 80yrs old, so he has to keep the volume down on his singing to save his voice, but that show he put on, with the backing band and singers, along with the special video effects, and doing it with what people wanted and have always wanted, which was a narrative about The Beatles, I think it was probably one of the best shows I have ever seen, and although his voice was quiet, his stage performance was good, and I think that the Glastonbury thing is well organised and PeterP have look at this LINK

On Sunday night I decided to watch the closing act, that rapper Kendrick Lamar, and how on earth can anyone of any age call that entertaining, and I can't find the words to describe how I feel about stuff like that without swearing, and I only watched it for five minutes, if I had to listen to that for any period of time, it would end up giving me serious mental health problems, and this is nasty, but a lot of those rappers get shot in America, and for that I am not surprised.

Why we have to put up with this crap every year excluding the pandemic is beyond my comprehension .The huge fees these "HASBEENS" will have commanded will have been way ,way too much ,one especially comes to mind that was Diana Ross from the second she walked onto the stage she was utter garbage as for singing? forget that for all s he could manage was to shout the words . As i said at the beginning i do not care for that sort of entertainment ( i use the word loosely ) but if that what floats their boats ,ok then but please BBC do we really have to have it on for so long ??? It is exactly what a section of society, and not just youths like GB and why you can’t accept or deal with it is a mystery.

2000 tons off waste are produced during the festival, and no doubt the organisers will have to pay trade waste fees to get rid of it.

Exactly, I do the same with the month or so of the game of Tennis which the BBC insist on showing every summer to please a minority of the population.

What is wrong is the way the BBC take off scheduled programmes to show an extended game.

If it was a a high profile worldwide rugby or football tournament instead of tennis would you still be whinging Todge?
