My parents lived in WW2 years all their lives, boring us all with tales from the war and how they coped.
Daisy lives in the miners strike and can't move on. If you met him in the street and said, "nice day today," he'd come back with something about the weather during the miners strike.

What happen to the Miners in 1984 has led to the situation today that nobody now has any guts to stand up against the employers for better pay, conditions and job security.

That is apart from people in the public transport industry like the members of the rail unions.

No, I won't tell people how I suffered at any time, it's nothing to do with them, these threads shouldn't be personal, and I'm quite sure they wouldn't be interested. For the record, I have worked very hard for what I have through some suffering, as have a lot of people on here.

The point about WW2 is that each generation has its own event to be remembered and the next generation aren't interested except on a historic level. And then people move on.

Kind and sensible words Platty... when I was courting her indoors who lived in hindley.. 7 members if her family worked for the NCB... either on top or in the face... I was a young bobby at the time and was at several locations... kirkless... parkside... golborne... leigh doing my bit (Preventing breach of the peace) I didnt want to be there full stop... but that was my job... I saw her family members all the time... on the picket line and socially... they all knew I wasnt a Maggies boot boy and treated me accordingly.... thats why we are all STILL a strong and caring family on her side... I was never insulted... abused... ignored etc... we laughed about it and I was glad to see the end of it. I honestly hope that the huge volumes of coal that are still there can be hued and decarbonised for good use.

BB: I could never understand the difference between the feelings in Yorkshire, total belligerence for the Force from all the miners there, and Lancashire, where it was reasonably good natured and an understanding of the jobs. Those feelings in Yorkshire are still there today.

Maybe a difference in education, which I think is extremely important in being able to see the other side's point of view. Sometimes, with a good argument, I have been persuaded to change my mind, as I'm sure others have.

During the strike Yorkshire was policed completely different ,on the whole the local hobbies behaved themselves apart from a few occasions when they as a massive advantage in numbers and got big headed ,the London police broke the law on every possible occasion

Whupsy all our family Doctors are has you put it from "overseas" along with most of the Health Professionals we have dealings with and up to now we have had very good service from most of them over the years. I had a run in with a Sister when our 2nd son was born(41 yrs ago) and 2 Doctors over my wife's stroke(10 yrs ago) also a nurse who tried to stop me visiting my wife outside visiting hours(4 yrs ago) all 4 were WHITE Has to being a COWARD so be it I enjoy life and get on with it ,fast approaching 70 and your a long time dead

Good question. I wouldn't want to go back there, the nation became divided and not in a nice way. It was very much public sector versus private sector.

The problem today is that we have a different younger generation who have only known the good life and never had to fight for anything to better their standard of living like older people by taking industrial action which includes the lost of money when out on strike.

I wonder what %age of my generation (72) have actually been out on strike. I know I haven’t but I may be an exception.

Broady…your words made me think. I cannot recall any of my family going on strike…my generation which is more or less yours and my parents generation as well. My father had six brothers my mother four sisters and a brother, none ever on strike. I expect it was dependent on their work, all of a manual type. Seems they managed well enough for most to eventually own their homes.

In my case, newly married in the early seventies and on strike for seven weeks living on the breadline and three weeks during the Murdoch/Shah printing dispute and other disputes to get better pay, condition's and job security.

Since the Miners strike of 1984. many have never seen any real industrial action until now.

I was on strike for the duration of the Miners strike. We would have won but the rest of the trade union movement refused to back us particularly the Notts Miners.

Yes. Whilst not necessarily condoning strikes (I have mixed feelings on this topic), I do recall that a series of strikes by rail workers, power workers and such like, witnessed miners coming out in sympathy. These groups then failed to reciprocate when it was the miners out on strike.

Neither justifying, nor condemning this. I genuinely do not know which view is the most honourable stance to take.

I am merely recording my recollection of how things were.

There is no longer the same support by the public for Unions taking Industrial action because as time has gone on since the bad strikes of the seventies, people have become more affluent and care less for others who are not on the same level of wealth.

Today, It is called looking after number one and sod everybody else!

The community way of life ended in the Thatcher era when she created a land of greed and selfishness which has led to many of the problems we have today like homelessness and lack of housing in a ever increasing population.
