Bank closures

Started by: PeterP (11291)

Every day we read about bank closures and the excuse being less and less people are going into the banks What the banks don't tell you is that they are forcing you to use on line banking to get better rates for your savings. One bank is offering 1.5% if you go to the bank and all ready have an account with them. But if you open an online account you can get up to 2,45%. This is OK if you have a computer but over 40% of people don't have access to a computer or don't own one

I've opened an account with Chase and it's 1.5% on savings, then 1% every time you spend from your spending account, then 5% reward if you round up to the nearest £ . If you refer a friend you both get £20 which I've done,so far it's brilliant

Nana that's OK if you have online banking. On the advert for Chase Bank the card issued has no numbers on it front or back. How do you pay using the card (no scanner m/c) when you are asked for the last 4 digits and the three digits on the back of the card if there are no numbers When I go onto my online Barclays account part of the log in asked me for the above.

Internet Banking is all well and good, but like many other things now, another example of how it has made people lazy with life now all revolving around a smart phone etc

How long will it be before people will be living like androids?

Disagree absolutely concerning on line activities make a person lazy. In my opinion it dispenses with aimlessly trailing about in order to achieve a mundane job otherwise done in seconds. Time and space can now be spent indulging in more productive pastimes. DIY, crafting, gardening and many other hobbies and interests.

Totally agree with you Anne , a friend of mine won't do internet banking so she gets on a bus at Orrell into Wigan then queues to be served then back home on the bus and it's taken half a day

Anne

Just exactly, how many do as you think think they do?

Nanajacqui

Perhaps, they also do it to visit the town centre and do other shopping, call in a cafe or pub for a drink and do what what many people used to do before the Internet.

Socialise!

OC… I cannot give a figure as to how many do as I and others do but there must be many using online banking facilities shown by the declining use of physical banking. Same goes for in town visits. As I have pointed out before I have not visited the town centre for seven/eight years now owing to lack of bus service, find I can manage quite well without. By all accounts the town centre is dead, many of my friends and neighbors do as I do.
Got to get on with jobs lined up for today. I am no longer a spring chicken so takes me twice as long to do half as much, another reason to bless online facilities.

My Wife and I are the same, but the fact remains that those who are more active should be visiting their town centres and socialising, especially as more now have cars to do so!

Not necessary to visit the town centre to socialise. I arrange visits, outings etc. at varying venues. Some visited by car others visited by public transport. The offerings of the town centre have become mundane with no attractions to temp myself and friends as a meeting place.

The use of the internet is essential to us as an elderly couple, and I am perfectly confident in using it without fear of scams or other threats.
In fact I think Old age would have been completely boring without it!

Its also essential to my Wife and I, but at the same time not everybody has got the means to get the Internet to do Internet Banking and Shopping and it is those who need to have banks and actually have to go out and do their shopping, especially those who even have not got a car to do it and are reliant on less Public Transport.

To much today of the "I am all right Jack attitude" by those who have the technology and do not care one iota for those have not!

Socking how selfish our society has become!

Owd Codger lots of people have the means to get a internet banking, but don’t,and I understand that, but the government should make the facilities more readily available to the elderly and encourage it’s use.
The Main Street banks will disappear and call centres answer all queries fairly promptly these days.
They could be quicker but definitely quicker than car and bus and sightseeing.
Nanajacqui do you not use face recognition on your phone?

"Call centres answer all queries fairly promptly these days"

You must be joking!
'
You are either in a queue for a while on a telephone or if you send a email, some never even bother to reply.

Not to mention dealing with different faceless people!

Erm I think that is why they are known as call centres !!
Owd Codger,I have spent time and lots of it on the phone in the past, but my recent experiences with call centres have been fairly swift, pleasant and productive, and on that I based my remark.

Some one wanted firms fined if they did not answer the phone in 10 mins last time I phoned some one on the phone 75 mins this was a bank .A few weeks ago I Had to phone Wigan Infirmary and . after the phone ringing for 5 mins I was put into an Auto queue and was told I was 108 in the queue I hung up and by luck found a direct number and got through straight away.

You must be a very patient person if you do not experience the problems that the majority of people now encounter today with call centres and treatment by companies towards them.

Its not moaning, just like the majority of people fed up with a example of the way our country has declined.

Owd Codger the longest I have waited is over half an hour in instalments trying to contact the doctors surgery!
I try to,if not extremely urgent, make contact early evening/late afternoon when they don’t seem to be as busy.
My only problem is understanding foreign accents so I try to use another route with emails.
In my opinion call centres have improved, they had to do,and are much better than a few years ago.but generally people moan a lot these days ,me included, but more than a few on here!
