ABBA

What say you about four geriatrics having you listen to their recorded music whilst viewing an illusion of them playing and appearing as they were when young?

It could be the shape of things to come.

Bands can stay home, living high on the hog, and send their avatars on tour to bring in the dosh.

First Mate, don't fret about getting their money back, tickets range from £141 to £910 and they are selling quite well. Although if the first night is a flop who knows what will happen.

They will soon get the costs down if it catches on.

Also there is the possibility of replacing the concept of a band touring with a simultaneous concert of avatars in lots of places at the same time: what a whopping money spinner that would become.

I love listening to Abba but won't be bothering going to that particular show.
Lots of geriatric groups around, although they do appear live, well almost

Said on news, just, that ABBA are already looking into the simultaneous world wide distribution option. There is enormous potential for making huge amounts of money.

Is there something insincere about presenting for public consumption, an image of yourself, but as you appeared 40+ years ago?

Spot on, their music does not age

What ABBA have done is something up until recent times would have been from the realm of science fiction, they actually performed the show, but each member of the group wore a close fitting garment, which was fitted with sensor points, and the show was recorded by 160 cameras, the camera's recording the shape and movements of the four members of ABBA.

This produced a highly detailed 3D recording of the show, and then the computer wizardry attached the younger images of the ABBA members on to the recorded shapes, so the shape and movements of the avatar holograms, are from the genuine ABBA group, recorded in the present day, so they are not a fully computer generated ABBA group, they are a living hologram, but have been given the appearance of how the ABBA members looked in their musical heyday in the 1970s.
I don't know if they will use the songs they recorded in the present day in the show, or the original recordings from the 1970s.

That specially constructed Arena, as already indicated in another post, could be a way of watching music in a VR, live setting, and if it was in say Manchester, I would pay £20-30 to see it, because you cannot appreciate what a 3D hologram looks like, unless you have see one in real life, it cannot be reproduced on a 2D screen such has a TV or computer monitor.

I have just listened to ABBA talking on TV news about the show.

I could not help observing that they definitely sounded their age, i.e. meaning speaking with the voice of an elderly person.

I bet that is not the voice you hear in the performance.

If not their old recorded sound, most likely electronically processed sound is what you will hear.

Once again, I can see this having wings. Music studios routinely use 'pitch correcting' software to render in tune the out of tune vocalists. (it is also able to change lots of other voice characteristics)

So, the live performance, in future could easily become 'Studio quality'!
(I think they will have to start calling them pseudo live, or problems with trades description may arise.)

Do you remember Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound"? It was always said to be studio bound, and could not be reproduced on stage: well! now it can.

Ena

I watched them on the news this lunch (dinna) time, and I cannot imagine them belting out 'Dancing Queen' with the same gusto, as they did in 1976, so I would imagine that they will be using their original music recordings in that new show

I have to admit, when I used to go clubbing, the music that would get most onto their feet and onto the dancefloor, was Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor, and ABBA. (especially 'Dancing Queen').

Last time I did so, however was 1998, so things may well have changed in the last 25 years or so.
