Manchester airport.

Would not travel from manchester airport for free at least until next year. Just seen it on the lunchtime news, absolutely disgraceful. Hate queueing at the best of times and just shows how poor the management at the moment, surely they must have known things were going to pick up. While I'm having a rant the new terminal 2 is not a patch on the old one and the walk to the gate is ridiculous! Rant over.

The problem is that Manchester Airport is run has a purely commercial organisation, it has to make a profit and pay its way, even though it is owned by the local authorities which make up Greater Manchester, and for me it comes back down to the fact that I believe that public transport, including the airports should be state owned, so that if something like the covid pandemic, effectively closes airports, then the state can keep the airport in a fully operational state, by retaining staff, and if the airports are effectively closed, then the staff could be redeployed into other roles, within the state owned government organisations, for example during the covid pandemic, staff from Manchester Airport could have been seconded into the NHS, to work in roles to which they are suited, maybe testing and things like that, answering the phones, so folk aren't waiting hours to get through.

Put that into the work contract before they start, and in times of crisis it would keep people in a job, and keep public services going.

I agree whole heartedly but that doesn't excuse the poor design off the new terminal. You have a mile to walk to the food courts which are totally inadequate and the travelators are often out of order. I've flown from 63 airports and manchester would not be in my top 50.

I think the rot set in at Terminal 2 after 9/11, when they closed the three lane drop off area, instead making single file traffic drop off in the adjacent short stay car park, and I haven't been to Manchester Airport for nigh on four years now, I actually hate the place, I hate the journey there from Wigan, I hate the motorways you have to travel on, the Thelwall viaducts, I hate anything to do with going to Manchester Airport.

Hate

For too long the Management at Ringway have fleeced the travellers and their family and friends who do the drop off and pick up.
The present difficulties are two fold, a security system that’s grossly inefficient and a poor decision not to put core workers on Furlough when Covid struck.

Its no Better at Glasgow, Covid ripped it to bits, Once a thriving busy airport is now , short staffed in every department, The bar/restaurant is closed, so is many of the kiosks and bank and currency shops, The information boards are not updated, Many disgruntled customers because they cannot get info, It seems the holiday industry is not ready yet to cope with the up coming summer,

Short staffed maybe due to brexit?
There were a lot of overseas workers doing those jobs pre brexit but a lot have all left now, and left us struggling and, complaining.

How can any employer be short staffed when so many are living on the benefit system.

Nothing to do with brexit, just employers cutting down the wage bill!

@Cheshire cat...Its nothing to do with brexit, during covid whilst on furlough, lots of the staff started doing other jobs, found out they liked the other jobs and never went back to work at the airport, this has happened in other sectors too.

The Manchester Airport problems are nothing to do with staffing levels and much to do with passenger numbers linked to bad infrastructure.
Those facial recognition cameras take too long and are inefficient. Ten years can alter your pan that much it’s not recognisable to the machine.
People cause holdups by trying to take all their Worldly goods on holiday with them. Bottles of perfume, shampoo, face cream etc., are all being taken when the rules are clear. Electronic equipment too, all having to be examined at security.
Then there’s three hundred people all being herded through two channels at the same time.
If they want to run an efficient airport, they need to upgrade the system to handle the numbers.
And the public transport all stops at night yet the planes continue to land, spilling out folk who can’t leave. It’s all shite!
Give me Liverpool Airport any day!

These tight fisted companies etc are reaping what they have sown , they were far too quick to get rid of their employee's due to the "flu" pandemic they could not bother to ride out the storm let's fire un all , now they have not enough to run the business ,was this short sightedness ??? I think so ,i just wish folk would try to holiday at home a bit more ....GB

This thread brought to mind one sunny afternoon back in 1960's

I was walking from Quarry Bank Mill to Styal Station, when a car pulled up, and the driver said, "Can you tell me how to get t' Ringworm"

I'll be strolling through Liverpool airport tomorrow, about 6pm, for an 11 day 'change of scenery'! There'll be no queues there, hopefully!
