dougie: Are there any restrictions still in place, like mask wearing, distancing, etc?

We have missed the theatre, especially the ballet, just wondering if it's okay to book again.

Hi Just been sent my tickets for the afternoon performance of South Pacific at the Manchester Opera House, will go from Leigh on the V1 bus free

Plus my Train tickets to Coventry for my 5 day stay in the Premier Inn, this is the first time I've booking by rail as we've always gone down by car, finding it's along way at my age and the M6 is not the best place to be on, hope everything works OK

Sent to Coventry, eh?

Only joking

What attractions draw you to spend five days there?

I have only been there once, that was to give a series of lectures. It was at a Trust House Forte? Blue Crest Hotel.
It sticks in my memory, as it had the most interesting modern sculpture I have ever seen.

It was called 'FLOW FORMS', it took a while for me to realise that is exactly what it was. In the space of just a few feet, falling water was constrained so as to show all the various styles of flow: streamlined flow, turbulent flow, eddies, explosive, alternating even showing what physicists would call heterodyne and musicians will recognise as beat frequencies. The later was produced by a confluence of two alternating flows.

I tried to buy it, but did not succeed.

Well, I won't be going to either Palace or Opera House, I do not go to musicals. Not casting any aspersions on those who do, mind.

However, I think Royal Exchange is probably best location for classical and contemporary drama in the North of England. I attended regularly when I lived in Manchester, and even after I left, had occasionally made the 200 mile round trip to catch a performance.

It is now a couple of decades since I was there, and Manchester has changed a lot.

I also no longer have living relatives in the area.

Can any of you be so kind as to suggest a good place to park, that might permit me an afternoon enjoying the city, followed by an evening at the R E, and still able to easily retrieve the car, possible after mid night for the drive home?

Ena, I know you are not a young person so, A midnight drive back of 100 miles would for me be, a task over and beyond my comfort zone, I would suggest an overnight stay in the travel lodge or Premier hotel, Dougie will have knowledge of the cheapest and both will have secure car parking,

Thanks, tom. That may be very wise, if only to make it less chore, and more enjoyable. (Also, can have a drink)

"not a young person": I appreciate that description.
Mick Jagger's words: "What a drag it is getting old" often ring in my ears.

I do though, try to do my driving when traffic is minimal. At this time of year, commonly set out at around 3-00 am

I find driving at night very stressful especially if its raining, An overnight stay with a good sleep and a breakfast then, an early morning Sunday drive would be much more attractive to myself ,,,, 3.00am ???? I never knew there was one of them

Come to think about it, I have always fancied a stay at The Midland.

When I was a kid, they did not let the likes of us walk on the pavement in front of its doors!

Last time I stayed in Manchester, it was at Charles Street Conference Centre. Whilst I was there, they were installing their Foucault's Pendulum. I see it has now become The Pendulum Hotel.

Just looked at this place Here Britannia Hotel] if going 28th July for one night, don't take any notice what anyone says take it from me it's OK, stopped there a few times, they have rooms on offer for that date £31 double or two single bed rooms with no window we've stayed in them, parking next door, I would look at booking a few nights

Thanks dougie.

I remember that building so well, but for the life of me could not recall what it had been used as. (had to Google)

I do miss Manchester, so maybe when next there is summut I fancy at the theatre, might take a few days for a visit.

I wouldn't go either but as you can see we've been together 60 years so it's give and take that's kept us together so long,

As for the Britannia Hotels there are a few up and down the country and you find they always have rooms on short notice, as for the rooms with no windows they have curtains closed hanging on the wall as if it's a window
Check this link out --Trains-- your much better if you can book for a planed trip 6 weeks or so in advance

Had not meant anything underhand with the comment, duggie. Different people-different tastes.

I like cheese full of penicillium mould:

I could never persuade my boss, who was American, that it was meant to contain blue mould: he thought that it was utterly revolting.

I have nowt against musicals. Just for me, feeling transported from my daily reality into that which the production is cast, totally collapses when the cast burst into song and dance routines.

Those which are more interactive: ie when we are up and dancing in the isle with them, I am more comfortable with. I even like a good 'Rocky Horror Show': it was not intended to be adult pantomime, but that is what the audiences have turned it into.

Occasionally go to opera, but find it a couple of hours of sitting through purgatory, to enjoy the gem of the grand operatic Aria!

So, classical (esp Shakespearian) or contemporary dramas are what draws me to performances.

Thanks also for the train link. Yes, I have used advanced purchase rail tickets in past for visiting the area.

I do enjoy the drive to Manchester, providing I can get an early start. Getting past Leeds before morning crush is the key, since M62 gets very choked once it starts.

Enjoy taking a break to watch the sunrise in the Pennines if I can get the timing right. Stop for brecky at Birch Services: normally will not eat at motorway services, but their egg, bacon, tomato, toast and coffee usually acceptable.

When my mother was still alive, I would get to Ashton around 6-00 am. She was an early riser, so good time.

My next trip over The Pennines may well not be to Manc, much as I do love and miss the dear old place.

I see that Shakespeare North in Prescot has opened.

Sounds good.

I have not been further West than Pimbo lane this Century, and have not been to Prescot since 1950's, and cannot really claim to know the area.

I had a few relatives with whom I could stay, but alas no more.

Any chance of recommendations for eateries and sleeperies in that neck of the woods?
