I have no idea whether GB is better off, or worse off, in, or out of the EU.

So, I did not vote in the referendum.

Sadly, I did conclude though, that the referendum was being used as a proxy for other conflicts which people were waging.

I do hear many people express the same sentiments as Roylew has.

I have also not voted at any election local and national for years, preferring trying to adjust my living style to whatever the election result is.

If I had felt that I had an adequate information set to reach a conclusion, then I would have voted.

I did purposefully seek information.

It appeared to me, that the last thing any of the vested interests wanted was for voters to consider reaching any LOGICAL conclusion.

It was completely polarised, truth gone out the window, exercise in emotive manipulation: people endorsing ridiculous statements. Had they stopped to think, they would know them not to be true, but hey, what use is truth, when we can wave a flag for our side.

I think this skulduggery will come back to bite you in the bum!

But we haven't left Europe, we have left the EU, and we are still trading with the EU, and in fact if the ferries could be getting their act together, and put on more ferries, we would be doing a lot more trade in Europe.

It is still early days as regards Brexit, so I am puzzled as to why some folk on here think it has gone 'wrong' I am giving it five years before I decide if the Brexit thing has worked, and that will be on January 31st 2026

TTS: The problem is that Brexit hasn't been done fully, as we hoped it would be. The immigration is appalling and France is punishing us. Plus the NI protocol is causing problems and the PM should just get on with it and show some round ones. He's got an 82 majority, well 81 now, and he's wasted it.
I think there will be problems in the EU now, Spain, Greece and Portugal are ganging up, saying they don't want to be the third members and Germany is showing herself to be a vassal state of Russia.

Reliving the referendum debate.
Problems caused by Covid or Brexit ?
Problems caused by Putin or Brexit ?

We are never going to agree on the above so why bother, it is history, it has been done, you know what I think about it, and I know what you think about it.

Immigration at the moment is quite high, lots of people are emigrating here from none EU countries, because there are opportunities to be had in this country, immigration is running at a higher rate now, than what it was just before Brexit, but the difference is that the people coming here to work, must have the correct documentation, and to get that documentation, they have to apply for it whilst still resident in their own country, and they must have been accepted, and have that correct documentation before they can travel here.

That is controlled immigration, and we need it, and not to be confused with the illegal immigrants coming across the channel in boats.

As regards Northern Ireland, is the thing working, and the only trouble is that the Unionists just don't like it, for sectarian reasons.

It is nearly 15 months since we were fully out of the EU, after the year long transition period, so without Covid or Putin, if those two things had not occurred, I think that 15 months, or if you like 27 months, is just not long enough to say whether Brexit has been to the benefit of this country, or it has been to the detriment of this country.

TTS: Why do you engage them. I have had discussions with family and friends who are remainers and all they do is shout. When I ask them to come up with serious comments, they never do. For instance, we gave £54m to France to deal with the people traffickers and they did nothing, their boats nudged the illegals into our waters. Is that not against international law?
France and Germany supporting Putin, (I know that has nothing to do with Brexit) but it is a reason many voted to leave.
The vote result took them by surprise, (the remainers told lies too) and they can't now move on and get a good, really good, Brexit, which is very much within capability and everybody's interests.

Keep going TTS, if you have to.

There are several Spaceports planned to be built in the UK, and construction has started at one which will be a test facility for the Spaceport which is to be built in Sutherland, LINK which is at the top of Scotland, 35 miles away from the old Dounreay Nuclear Power Station LINK

Those rocket pads in Scotland will be good for launching satellites into Polar Orbits, and another Spaceport is Spaceport Cornwall LINK

Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic is going to be launching satellites from Spaceport Cornwall this summer LINK

The associated industries and spinoffs from Spaceports can generate a lot of wealth for a country, Britain already builds a significant number of satellites, and soon Britain will not only be building them, but launching them and controlling them, and it makes you wonder where the Mission Control facilities will be located, it won't be in Cornwall or the North of Scotland, I suppose they could be in London, but maybe Manchester or Liverpool will be in the running, because I can see rockets being built in the new technology corridor, which is being built by Peel Holdings and the Government along the River Mersey in between Warrington And Liverpool, so rockets could be being built in Warrington, and floated on pontoons from Liverpool to Spaceports around the country.

So I would imagine if such a scenario panned out, the control facilities for UK Spacecraft might be located nearby in Manchester, 'Mission Control Manchester'

It sounds far-fetched that doesn't it, but these things are going on in this country, and now we don't have any stupid EU regulations standing in the way of such projects, so would it not be better for the media to be reporting on positive news like the UK Space program, rather than bitching on about Boris having a drink and piece of cake

Replied: 29th Apr 2022 at 12:34

Posted by: Tommy Two Stroke (15202)

Well let us deal with some facts, instead of rhetoric.

Ena

How did Russia influence the result of the referendum ?

Whupsy

Yoo stated that there were food shortages, well before covid, well there were no food shortages, in fact what happened was that a lot of goods were stockpiled ahead of Brexit on the 31st January 2021, and because of that, there were shortages of warehouse space, particularly cold storage space, that was because as we approached Brexit, no trade deal with the EU had been agreed, so no, there was no 'oven ready' deal waiting with the EU as Boris stated during the 2019 November general election, you can have that one, however a deal was agreed and signed on the 30th December 2020 LINK

So Whupsy, the deal was done before Brexit, it might not have been oven ready, and it needed some preparation, but in the end it was cooked, with just a month to spare

And yes, Boris does tell lies

But how can you say that Brexit has failed ?

You believe that Russia influenced the result of the referendum, and if it were not for the Russians, we would still be in the EU.

But from your earlier snide comment about UFO's and little green man, I would take it that you don't believe in UAP.

I would put it to yoo, that there is much more 'proof' in the truth that UAP exists, and is as a result of extra terrestrial visitation to our planet, by aliens, there is much more proof of that, than there is proof of Russia influencing the result of the referendum.

You are believing what it suits you to believe, rather than believing based on facts, even if that belief is not what you want to believe.

The mass asylum seekers coming to Britain, started in the 1990s due to conflicts in the Middle East, the first Gulf War, Iraq persecuting the Kurds etc, that caused a lot of refugees to flee the Middle East and head towards Europe, and then there were the Balkan Wars in Europe, which were also in the 1990s, and as these things were happening, in 1995 the Schengen Agreement came into being, abolishing border controls between EU countries, and that meant that refugees from the Middle East who made it into the EU through places like Greece, then to get to Britain, there was nothing stopping them only a long walk, and it was the young males who made the journey, Britain was said to be the land of milk and honey, so they all wanted to come to Britain, and so when these 'people' because they weren't refugees, and when they arrived at the channel ports, in the late 1990s and early 2000s it wasn't difficult for them to sneak aboard a lorry and smuggle themselves into Britain, and once here they applied for political asylum, and there were thousands of them, and they were spread out by the authorities across the country, into places like Wigan, and British folk did not like it, but Tony Blair was keen not to upset the EU, because he wanted the top job there, when he handed over his premiership to Gordon Brown, so he dragged his feet in doing something about it, because the EU wanted Britain to accept the asylum seekers, so it was like now, folk were going mad over the amount of asylum seekers who were coming here to milk the British asylum seeker system, and Tony Blair only did something about it, when he could see that politically it was becoming damaging for him and the Labour Party, and he did not want to lose the then next general election because of it.

But how all of this has panned out, I believe has confused people, because as Britain managed to bring the influx of asylum seekers under control in the early 00s, by basically paying the French to turn the channel ports into fortresses, and giving lorry drivers heavy fines, if they brought any asylum seekers into the UK, they did get on top of the problem, and the numbers coming here dropped.

But in 2004, and as I remember it was just as they had got the asylum seeker problem under control, the free movement of people across the EU thing started, and EU citizens could just jump on a plane, boat or car and come here, and they had the same right to benefits etc, as British people had, and millions came here, and the EU immigration to Britain was perfectly legal, and it was running at about a third of a million people a year, so the EU migrants took over from the asylum seekers, as the foreign people who were coming here, only they were in far greater numbers, than the then asylum seekers and that was basically what the Brexit thing was about, and someone on this topic said we should have done more as a member of the EU to stop it, well as I remember the UK tried, and the EU would not listen, free movement of people between EU countries is enshrined into the EU thing, and David Cameron tried very hard in 2015 to get the EU to make a special case for Britain, because Britain was having a particular problem, with a massive increase in population, from EU citizens coming here, and the EU told him to go and swivel on it, they told him that Britain was just one of 29 countries, and all EU countries had to follow the same EU rules, and allow free movement of EU people, and all they did over those years from 2004 until Brexit was to refuse the EU immigrants access to certain benefits, but they still had the 'right' to come here.

So with Brexit the EU immigration has stopped, so now we are back to asylum seekers, who are travelling here across the channel by small boats, but as I have said to Golden Bear, when he is having a meltdown, when he sees the UK coastguard giving those asylum seekers a lift into Britain, those hundreds and thousands, which having been coming here across the channel in a dinghy, and although it is blood boiling annoying, it is not in the millions which we had coming here when we were in the EU, and the Rwanda thing might stop them completely.

As regards the Ukrainian refugees, they are genuine refugees, so they should speed up the visa processing, and get them into this country in the thousands., because it is the right thing to do.

"The main 'advantage' of Brexit, is the stopping of the mass immigration into this country from the EU."

So when is it going to become an "advantage"?
Its clearly not working and you very well know it! And don't blame covid like some folk do as covid has nothing whatsoever to do with it.
I personally thought the money PROMISED to the NHS would have softened the blow a bit. But thats never happened has it

I am uncertain whether the new immigration laws as tts points out have been a complete success.
A problem recruiting workers on farms, in processing plants and abattoirs previously staffed by workers from the EU has been a major setback in the food industry.
And it is a continuous complaint that red tape is a drawback to transporting goods.
And the link tts provided shows that a hotel room and a fiver a day for food is not exactly luxury and living it up,when fish and chips is 6 quid these days!

The Heath government took us into the EEC (the common market) on the 1s January 1973 and shortly thereafter prices started to shoot up, and there was a public outcry over it, because there had not been a referendum on whether the UK should join the EEC.

In the general elections of 1974 (there were two) the Labour Party who at that time were against Britain joining the EEC, promised in their election manifesto to have a referendum on whether to remain in the EEC, or leave, and after being elected in 1974, the Labour Party held the 1975 referendum on whether to reman in the EEC, in which the British public voted to remain in the bloody thing.

Whups: Scientists are blaming methane for climate change and is partly caused by cows emitting methane when they burp. So they propose making cows wear special masks.
The methane expelled by the other end is a bit of a problem and someone suggested some sort of trousers made from strong, thick, impenatrable material such as leather. (Though the cows might object to that choice).
In 2014 the EU imposed a directive outlawing the use of fertilisers on any slope with a gradient of more than 15 per cent.
A farmer in Germany, whose family had grazed their cattle on a local hillside for over 400 years was concerned that Brussels might rule that cow pats constituted a form of fertiliser so he dressed his herd in nappies.

Now, whups, if all farmers did that, so methan can't escape from either end, what will happen? Methane is lighter than air, so will the cows slowly inflate and then, like a hot air balloon, float off?
Serious danger to aircraft, whups, and the bulls and heifers won't be amused, but at least with nappies there's no danger of being hit by cow droppings.

The city men in Brussels are so clever, aren't they whups?

Wigan did not have to go down the road of having thosands of private and commercial motorists face financial penalties: Wigan chose to do so. However, two points. David Molymeux is not the council leader, he's the councillors leader. And, the decision to do so HAD TO BE taken by the 8 members of Wigan Council's Cabinet, as they had no choice in the matter.

It follows that the local elections are pointless. It matters not one iota who 'gets in', or their political persuasion.

Andy Burnham, when campaigning for GM mayor, said he would push the Gov to have GM included in the CAZ scheme - that's there in black and white on his Facebook.

Wnwanderer, why no mention of the letter AB sent to Johnson on the 3rd of March in that he said that it was the wish of the 9 Greater Manchester labour leaders, and the Bolton tory leader that a non charging CAZ zone would be the preferred route of them all and that the ball was now in his court.
Below is an article from Yahoo news.

"The Prime Minister has ignored calls to scrap all Clean Air Zone charges in Greater Manchester responding to a letter from leaders eight weeks ago.

Mayor Andy Burnham wrote to Boris Johnson on March 3 saying that the Labour leaders of the city-region want a non-charging scheme instead – and Bolton’s Conservative leader Martyn Cox also supported the suggestion.

It came after the controversial scheme which was set to start charging some commercial vehicles which exceed air quality standards in May was paused.

In his letter, Mr Burnham said the delay means air quality compliance can be achieved without charges, but by offering funding to upgrade vehicles instead.

This followed comments by the Prime Minister in Parliament in which he described the Clean Air Zone as ‘thoughtless’ and said it should be scrapped.

However, responding to the mayor’s letter eight weeks later, Mr Johnson did not address the Greater Manchester leaders’ calls for a non-charging scheme.

In the letter to Mr Burnham, the Prime Minister wrote: “Thank you for your letter of 3 March about the Greater Manchester Clean Air Zone (CAZ).

“I am aware that Greater Manchester’s CAZ plans are now under review, following discussions with the Environment Secretary and the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State.

“Our officials remain ready to engage constructively with yours to deliver the right plans for Greater Manchester. Thank you, once again for writing.”

Mr Burnham said he was ‘shocked’ to receive the letter a week before the local elections.

He said: “The Prime Minster told the House of Commons he would scrap the Clean Air Zone and now in a letter to me he’s refusing to rule out charges.

“We’re in a position again where the Prime Minster is saying things in the House of Commons which he will not back up in print to an elected mayor.

“That’s revealing and it’s something that people need to know before they vote. They should not, in my view, fall for the Tory propaganda.

“They instigated this and won’t rule out a charging Clean Air Zone.”

Conservatives have been campaigning against the Clean Air Zone ahead of the local elections next week, blaming Mr Burnham and local Labour leaders.

Before he became mayor in 2017, Mr Burnham called on the government to give Greater Manchester the power to create a Clean Air Zone in Parliament.

However, he later explained that he wanted a ‘non-charging’ Clean Air Zone.

The Government issued a ministerial legal direction on all ten Greater Manchester councils in 2019 requiring that the local authorities model a charging Clean Air Zone which would deliver air quality compliance by 2024.

But following a public backlash, the government agreed to postpone the deadline and allow Greater Manchester to submit a new proposal by July.

A new ministerial direction requiring Greater Manchester to comply with legal limits on air pollution was issued, delaying the deadline by two years to 2026.

After the new deadline was announced, the mayor wrote to the Prime Minister with the backing of Labour leaders calling for a non-charging Clean Air Zone.

Since then, Bradford councillors were told that government ministers refused a request to alter the town’s own Clean Air Zone plans by scrapping charges.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has been contacted for comment."

Originally Burnham asked that GM create their own CAZ zone and later qualified that it would be non charging. This was I think in 2017.

TTS,
The letter from Teresa Coffey was to all GM councils instructing them to implement a CHARGEABLE CAZ.
My point is that it was Andy Burnham taking the flak unfairly and being accused of instigating the charges.
After Johnson’s scurrilous statement in the commons ,blaming Burnham,in answer to a question from guess what,a local Tory mp,forget who it was.
In response Burnham wrote the letter on the 3rd of March asking Johnson just what his idea was and stating that the 10 council leaders preference all along has been a non chargeable zone and in Johnson’s reply he said that the chargeable zone was the preferred option of the government in effect.
I have said all along that the original plan put forward was flawed, but I think the correspondence indicates where the blame should lie and it ain’t with Burnham.

The only reason why some are saying that we should have stayed in the EU is because the political parties for whom they vote and the newspapers they read say so!

On issues like the EU, people should remember that in 1973, our country voted to join a Common Market on Trade, and not a undemocratic political organisation which is a gravy train for those involved in it.

A example of which, my Wife and I discovered when we went on a coach holiday to Switzerland and on the way out and return stayed for one night at the five star Swiss Hotel in Brussels. When I asked one of the drivers, why were we staying in a five star hotel and not the usual three star hotel, his reply was "The European Parliament is in recess. If it was sitting, you would not get anywhere near any of the many five star hotels in Brussels"

Where the EU is concerned, people need to think and see for themselves and not be led by others with their own agenda's and vested interests of why we should be in it!
