St George's Day

Today is St Georges Day flicked through one of the papers No mention of it The other three nations celebrate their patron saint and have a Bank Holiday to boot. Are we not bothered or do any pubs deck their rooms with red and white flags etc

However the end of RAMADAN was in all the papers and on the news. Says it all

No one was really bothered about St Patricks day either until one of the worlds largest brewers of stout started using it as a marketing tool.

I will be celebrating the day Peter with a couple of English Carling beers tonight,

For me we're less inclined to celebrate our ‘national day’ in the way in which the Irish, Welsh and Scots celebrate theirs as we have never been oppressed in the way that they all were; mostly by the English I hasten to add. Neither do we feel that another country is dominating us and therefore feel the need to be fiercely protective of our heritage and language.

And of course we don’t have a thick black stout brewery or a whiskey distillery marketing the day for us.

Tonks: I notice the horse is white. That says it all. I notice on the ads these days, it's the whites doing the delivering and service.

There is a walk In Wigan tomorrow in honour of St. George's day. Starts at 11.00 am.

Over in Spain they celebrate St. George (Sant Jordi) in style. Big festivals take place in many towns and the one in Montblanc lasts all week. Human Pyramids, Fires, Fireworks, Jousting, Falconry, Roast Boar, Y Mucho Vino Negro!

So, they're having 'a walk' in Wigan, eh.?

In Spain, Saint George also came to be considered as the patron saint of the medieval Crown of Aragon, the territory of four current autonomous communities of Spain: Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Nowadays Saint George is the saint patron of both Aragon and Catalonia, as well as the saint patron of historically important Spanish towns such as Cáceres or Alcoi (Spanish language: San Jorge, Catalan language: Sant Jordi, Aragonese language: San Chorche).[18]

His feast date, April 23, is one of the most important holidays in Catalonia, where it is traditional to give a present to the loved one; red roses for women and books for men. In Aragon it is a public holiday, celebrated as the 'National Day of Aragon'. It is also a public holiday in Castile and Leon, where the day commemorates the defeat at the Revolt of the Comuneros.

Yes, I would think giving your loved one and not your wife would end up needing help if she found out.

The English i am afraid to say "Don't give a flying Fig " about ST.George's Day , now if it were a public holiday which i believe it should be ,then i think people would take to it more . Like has been said the other nation's go wild about theirs ,for me i do think it should be a bank holiday ,instead we have to wait donkey's years for some one in a Castle in Windsor for us to have one ???? Just read a little more about him.
He wasn't even knight. According to Mr. Wikki. He was in the Roman army and never even set foot in England.
He was martyred for his Christian faith, beheaded. And King Edward 111 declared him the patron Saint of England. . The dragon represents the fight between good and evil.


St George was canonised in AD 494 by Pope Gelasius, who claimed he was one of those 'whose names are justly revered among men but whose acts are known only to God'. A feast day of St George has been celebrated in England for hundreds of years on 23 April, which was possibly the date of his martyrdom.

St. Patrick wasn’t Irish either. He was either Welsh or Scottish depending what you read. From memory I think his parents were Roman.

The Northern part of our island, then called Caledonia, was inhabited by Picts. The Scots (Scotti) were then still in Hibernia (as Ireland was then called).

They had not yet crossed to our island, and mixed with Picts and Viking and other Norse to create what we now call Scots.

So, paradoxically, if he were a Scot, then he would be Irish.
