ICONIC OBJECTS.

What are the most iconic objects you have actually touched? Mine are.
APOLLO 11 COMMAND MODULE.
A PIECE OF MOON ROCK.
THE TITANIC
A METEORITE 4.5 BILLION YEARS OLD.

A piece of English coal Most kids of the modern era would not know what it looks like

Well it sounds like admin has been to the Smithsonian in Washington, but I touched the heat shield of Gemini 11 at the Kennedy Space Centre, but every other piece of rockets, was covered in plastic, this was the Command Module, from the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975.



I couldn't touch this Lunar Module, because it was out of reach, and it said no photography, but I took a picture of it anyway



I have not really touched anything iconic, because I am a bit funny about touching things, because you don't know who has touched them before you, and had they washed their hands, I am not a touchy-feely person, some folk can't keep their hands off anything, they have to touch and maul with everything, and they have to be told "Look With Your Eyes, Not Your Fingers" but I never had to be told that

Nothing mentioned so far is iconic, they are all the real thing. Get to know!

This isn't "iconic" in the real sense of the word, but to follow the thread anyway with oldest or historic things, I have two ammonites which were cephalopods which died out 66 million years ago. They aren't rare though.

I've had several iconic guitars, American Fenders and Gibson,
Leo fender invented the electric guitar in the 1940's and although electronics technology has moved so much from then, The fender guitar has never been improved, In fact the original Fender guitars are worth more by country miles than a brand new China copy because, They cannot reproduce the sound of those original Fenders, Even with todays electronics, Now that is very rare and very Iconic

Les Paul who, was a jazz guitarist who played a Gibson, Gibson were So impressed with the Fender that, their engineers copied it and in later years produced the " Gibson Les Paul" guitar which is, a famous rival to the fender Stratocaster,,

I always thought it was Rickenbacker who invented electric guitars, but I thought wrong, as it wasn't. It was somebody else. I learned it, from a book.
I also thought that Les Paul himself designed his own electric guitar, as an improvement of the previously designed model and Fender improved on Les Paul's design.

Once you have an 'idea' imprinted in t'yed, it's hard to shift. Even when the real story is told.
A bit like Marks and Spencer, happening to open a shop in Wigan, a few years after they'd opened other shops in other places, it's always thought, in Wigan, laaaaike, that Wigan was THE first.
I've also heard it said that William Lever, you know, the one from Bolton who didn't invent soap?, opened his first 'soap making establishment / shop' in Wigan. Not so.

well here's true account, Les Paul was a frustrated jazz guitarist, his solos could never be amplified loud enough, So he approached Leo Fender, A electrical engineer, He designed and built the first solid bodied guitar and amplifier called it the Broadcaster, It was an overnight success as every guitarist wanted one, So he put them in production and renaming them stratocasters, and iffen you don't believe me , do as the electrical engineers do here, Google it

Not that I'm out to prove a point, raaaaight, but several sources on Google state that Les Paul invented it, using a railway sleeper. Or something like that.
Les Paul even said it himself in his biography, "In His Own Words".

most people have touched historic items.For me it was when I went to Petra then pyramids and last St Peters in Roam boaring I know but still an experience

I have a gryphaea (devils toe nail) of about 600 million years old, although quite common it does fill me with wonder each time I dust it.
Also walking through the bomb ruins of Coventry cathedral and touching the walls gives a sense of awe.

I once went to Stonehenge, and it's weird how it appears in the middle of nowhere, and I wanted to touch the stones, but they had fenced them off, because of the bloody druids, who kept mauling with them, and that was in 1980 before they mucked about with the roads, and built a nearby visitors centre, all that there was there then, was a smallish gravel car park.

I think that Stonehenge is iconic
