Overnight closures from Monday 11.04.22 for road surfacing works.

Closed at 8pm to 6am for a couple of weeks.

I just wonder how we managed to defeat the Japanese??? When one looks at how they work and their ethic's it put's us to shame , the amount of time this lot doing road works along Wallgate and other parts of Wigan is an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE! As i have written on here before when they suffered Tsnunami there was a section of roadway completely destroyed for a length around 8-10 miles the job was completed inside 2-3 weeks , this shower who work on our road's must be taking the michael .But then again it's only the British driver they won't moan about .... Do they no longer have penalty clauses on contracts where contactors lose money if the delivery is not made on time?

It would have been delivered on time, if they had not reduced Wallgate to 1 running lane each side. Complaints by the Emergency Services were made apparently and it has had to be put back to 2 running lanes each side. The fault lies within the planning not the execution of the work.

You are indeed correct, but are you surprise when you see some of the many other road planning decisions around Wigan made by the Road Traffic Planners of the Council.

Half of the road planning dept probably don't live in the Wigan area and don't know anything about the road network around Wigan

A few years ago, I contacted the Council with what I considered to be a good improvement to a road in Wigan, but in reply they said it was impracticable.

Guess what, a year or so later it was done

Needless to say, I have never contacted them again with any suggestion!

Last month Ashton councillors and a committee were asking for ideas to improve anything to do with the town. I wrote and said why not move the traffic lights back up Bolton road by about 10yds to allow large vehicles to turn left off Wigan Road onto Bolton Road easier. This would involve moving one set of lights and increasing the delay time by about 3 seconds for vehicles wanting to turn right into Wigan Road. I got a reply back saying this would make Bolton Road into a single lane for stationary traffic and would create a tail back up Bolton Road. 1st I don't think they had ever seen the traffic tailed back up Bolton Road,2nd also I bet they have never seen HGV/Buses struggle to turn left off Wigan Road . 3rd the distance involved would only hold1-4 vehicles which now take up two lanes. Like Owd Codger says pointless coming up with any suggestions

Good progress being made on Wallgate as the top layer of tarmac has been laid on the road overnight.

No road markings yet though.

Tom's cycle lanes must be last on the list.

The finishing touches to the cycle lanes were being done this morning including the markings.

It will now be a pleasant and safe cycle ride to and from town.

Those green lanes are Brill, just a bit short though and interrupted by car users , from my end of town they start at, Clap lane to Little lane, then none at all to Alexandra Park, Then a good green lane to the saddle, then a mish mash of pavement sharing to Wigan Pier then another good run up to the railway Bridge over Wallgate, They all need joining up and that would help the traffic congestion, The air quality and peoples health, Until they get joined up, the in-between bits are not safe for familys or new bikers with little confidence,

I don't know what you do at the Saddle Tom but I use the shared lane running past Home Bargains, Maccies and Screwfix and then cross over at the railway bridge rather than use the crazy golf course route near the Ambulance and Fire Station.

The crossroads at the Bird in Hindley are a pain, it only needs a 10 sec delay on the lights from Atherton Rd side to solve a big problem, traffic from Wigan Rd to Liverpool Rd can't move until the traffic from Atherton Rd stops or there is a gap, if there are more the 10 cars wanting to turn right from Wigan Rd, traffic wanted to go to Atherton Rd are blocked, so no one moves.

What about the proposed traffic scheme that was suggested a couple or so years back ??? GB
