Beaverbrooks In Wigan ?

Well here i go again calling this utter inept council that is running down this once proud Lancashire town. My latest rant at them is because i was rang this morning from a member of staff who works in one of our town's Premier stores, BEAVERBROOKS , because over the last 50 odd years whenever i or my good lady have an occasion to purchase some types of jewellery etc we have always gone to the store in our town Wigan , Alas in six (6) weeks time it will close it's doors forever . When i inquired as to why ,how i was informed she and all her staff have been informed by their head office that they have really tried to find an adequate store somewhere in the town,and when all the costs have been added up of a remove plus and this is one of the main reasons for not staying in Wigan was ,,,are ready ...
The rates being quoted were astronomical . So yet again this greedy council are to see another top mark store to vanish from it's high street . I do not know if any of the comic councillors read WW, but if they do they should be well and truly ashamed . After all the changes they are proposing i just do not know what there will be left to look /browse and shop. I AM now going to contact my M.P a certain Lisa Nandy to ask her just what is she going to do about all these closures??? This is getting very near to the last nail in Wigan's coffin. GB

It will close it's doors because they are demolishing the building for redevelopment.
So which other buildings do the council own that are for rent?

I would think if the building is being demolished it is up to the Beaverbrooks management to find new premises as they have been given notice,so the buck stops there!

So GB..... Shops are closing and its nothing to do with.....
Lack of footfall.
Increasing energy costs
Increasing wages
Increasing insurance costs
Increasing property rental costs.
Competition from internet sales.

Instead you claim its all down to business rates which aren't even set by the council?

Imagine this scenario.......purely hypothetical of course and try and get your head around it.

A high street shop has a running cost of £200k a year and returns £400K a year profit
A website and a warehouse has a running cost of £200k and returns £500k a year profit

Which is the better business option? a high street shop or a online facility, and which is more convenient for the customer a website open 24 hours a day with home delivery or a trip into town during opening hours?........Need a clue?....A M A Z O N!

This is what is happening. High street shopping is not viable anymore, there are easier ways for the business owners to make a profit from their capital and they are more convenient to their customers.

The jewellers at the entrance to the grande arcade is closing down not renewing the lease

Its no use anyone moaning about shops in town and city centres closing when people are being charged for parking while at the same time, they can go to Retail Outlets like Robin Park and Middlebrook, Supermarkets etc and park for free.

Not to mention the incease in online shopping, which at least is increasing the number of jobs at Carrier firms.

I never saw the point of aimlessly wandering round a familiar towns familiar shops. When looking for something specific OK. Many people see it as a form of free entertainment and arrived back home having bought nothing.
Nowadays looking for something is quick and easy then go out to try if necessary.
Personally I prefer to spend my time in a more productive way.

I think I would be more upset with the loss of stores like Marks & Sparks, and Morrisons and stores like that, rather than a flamin jewellers.

How can sitting at home ordering things on a PC or Smart Phone be more healthy than exercing your legs in town centre, retail park or even a Supermarket etc.

Many even go to town centres to go in the cafes and pubs as well as looking in the shops.

We are becoming more and more a lazy country and it is surprising that there are now so many with walking problems when they spend so much time riding around in a car or sitting at home ordering everything online.

Owd Codger people need exercise to try to keep fit and well. I don't know how old you are but myself I am in my late 60's and find Wigan hard work because most of it is on the slope. Even Mackinsons Arcade as a slight incline. The other day we went to Wigan and parked up I got my missus into her wheelchair then I came round the multi storey car park cut across the open market up through Mack's Arcade up the brow to the Yorkshire BS and by this time I was knackered. Not ideal no matter were you go shoving a wheelchair around Wigan

A lots of assumptions there. Someone chooses to shop on line. That doesn’t mean they then sit about. They may choose to spend productive time in the garden rather than be stuck in traffic. They may go for a walk in the open air rather than a town. Lots of ways to get exercise rather than shopping in town.

Quite right broady….I get plenty of exercise both inside (housework and treadmill) outside I have a biggish garden with the only help being a chap cutting the lawn in the summer. The rest is up to me. I also do some decorating, always spend time cleaning my car, when called upon I do voluntary work in a local charity shop. The local farmer allows me to wander across the fields accessed over the garden wall. All in all far better than ambling round town. I consider at my age I am much fitter than many eighty one year olds.

You shound try telling that to some of the people who live around me who go the convenience store and takeaway which are no more than a couple hundred yards away rather than walk.

With Wigan town centre, I agree with you as it it not suitable for those in wheelchairs or have walking problems as it is in the case of my Wife. The reason why we prefer to go to shopping in Chorley and sometimes in Bolton and St Helens.

PETERP/ My sypaphies goes out to you mate and your wife , i too now find it very difficult navigating Wigan these days due to deteriorating health issues. It does not seem that long ago i used to run from where Debenhams at corner of Crompton st ,up to Station Rd to catch last number 10 bus to Worsley Mesnes ( A minute or two) nowadays more like 20 minutes haha Oh to be young again .
