I have a few friends who are Geordies. Their speech can be challenging at times.

Maybe it is catching. I was once mistaken for a Geordie when I walked into a shop, and completed the lines of a Geordie song which the proprietor happened to be singing!

She was good really good, Pam Airs did it years later on TV but not a patch on you Mum, just think if your Mam had had a good writer using in his own words and your Mam read them out in her own way as she did in the 40/50/60, she didn't only talk Wiginees but words from all over Lancashire in the same reading,

Don't forget in them days DG came under the Ashton area not so today it comes under the St Helens area I am told I have a Wigan accent but I was born in Garswood and my mother was a "Yicker" and my dad was from Gosport So where did I pick my accent up from

You got your accent from Garswood, obviously. An Ashton accent is not a Wigan accent.
Talking ‘broad’ is not talking with a Wigan accent.
I have relatives in Garswood, on my mum’s side, and in Billinge on my dad’s side. I mean ‘old’ relatives.
I remember visiting when I was a kid, and they’d be in their 70’s / 80’s then. All spoke with a broad pitmon / farmer accent. The women too. My great, great aunt in Spindle Hillock, Garswood wore clogs and a shawl.
My wife is from Wigan. That’s Wigan, not another town, close to Wigan. Her relatives on her mum’s side were all from Wigan. NONE spoke with that broad accent, like Garswood and Haydock. They all spoke with a Wigan accent, raaaaight (or reet, as the case may be!).

And, Peter, I know Garswood used to be in Lancashire, under Ashton udc control, and is now in St.Helens, and you don’t like it being in St.Helens, do you?
So you make sure to point out that it didn’t ‘used to be’. Well, it isn’t in Wigan, it’s not even under Wigan council and it never was!

Can I add my two-peneth to this conversation

In my opinion the Ashton accent, which is a Lancashire accent, has been watered down by the Liverpool accent, caused by the mass migration of the mushroom people in the 1960s and 70s, the younger Ashton people have a different accent to the older ones, and I think that the new accent sounds better, it is not as rough as the older Lancashire accent.

Tonker I know Garswood/DG where part of the Wigan area and are now under St Helens area and I am not bothered one way or the other. Its over 46 years since I moved from D/G and don't have any living relatives at D/G but still have relatives around Garswood.

Peter, Garswood (which Downall Green is a part of) has NEVER been part of the Wigan area no more than the WN postal area.
What’s the Wigan area anyway?
I’d call Garswood in the Garswood area, which is part of the Ashton area. Haydock is in the Haydock area.
St.Helens is a borough, named after a church, which contains towns.
Wigan is a town.
Wigan borough is a borough named after a town, which contains other towns. The other towns are not Wigan.
To save confusion, local government areas should not be named after a constituent town.

my address was always DY @ Popular Avenue, North Ashton. Nr Wigan. Lancashire. if I still lived there that's what it still would be with the post code WN4 added.

Before about 1974 Garswood/Seneley Green was in the North Ashton Boundary before the mix-up that took place, I knew this was going to happen long before 1974,

give us the old boundary line as YOU knew it from the S bend on Billinge Road to the A49 Warrington Road, before the change
