£1.44.9

Started by: GOLDEN BEAR (6556)

I am asking for someone to please explain to me just how can a firm that sells petrol .diesel etc charge the consumer £1 .44.p .9 of a PENNY When i used to attend my secondary modern and junior schools i was never taught that we had such thing as a point of a penny! Those days we had 240 whole pennies to one pound . Then it changed to 100 pence to one pound and still is today ( i think ) SO why and how when i go for a litre of petrol i am told i have to pay £1 pound 44 pence and point 9 of a penny , WHEN THERE IS NO SUCH THING , WHY AM I AND THE GREAT BRITISH PUBLIC ARE ALLOWING THIS TO HAPPEN ????? TO GO ONE FURTHER WHY ON EARTH ARE WE STILL TALKING IN TERMS OF LITRES /METRE'S ETC WHEN WE ARE NO LONGER GOVERNED BY EUROPE ???? CAN'T WE NOT REVERT TO GALLON'S AND OUNCE'S?? FOR WHEN I GO TO BUY A NEW CAR THE REP ALWAY'S SAY'S TO ME THIS SIR DOES 45 MILE 'S TO THE GALLON , HE /SHE NEVER SAY'S IT DOES X AMOUNT OF MILES TO THE LITRE SO I ASK WHY,WHY ???? JUST THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE A RANT TODAY ! GB

GB,
Rough cost to convert every petrol pump, every set of scales, every weighbridge etc. to your way. I wouldn’t think many folk even know what ounces are and feet and inches will be a mystery. Younger folk will have to go to night school. All costs involved back to consumer so as you say a rant but a definite non starter.

But no one buys exactly one1 litre of petrol GB and if one garage charges £1.499p a litre and another charges £1.498p which is the better deal? Particularly if you are running a fleet of vehicles and buying say 25,000 litres a week?

People buy £30, £40 £50 worth or fill their tanks up. Garages themselves buy tens of 1000s of litres every week. When you are dealing with large numbers of litres that 0.009p becomes significant.

An exact litre of petrol may cost £1.499p but you are going to pay £1.50p and in return you will get 1.001 litres of petrol.

Make sense?

Probably not!

You have to buy 10 litres of fuel to get it at the advertised .9 price. That said, 149.9 looks cheaper than 150, to a customer and that's why it's done.
A customer will be more attracted to a telly advertised for £299.99 than one up the road for £300.
The difference in fuel and televisions is the net profit.
Haydock Island could do one and a half tankers, 55,000 litres, a day. That's £55 cost on return at .1 pence reduction per litre.
You might think £55 a day isn't a lot to lose on that much fuel, but when the net profit is less than 5% it's a lot!

Fuel pumps are tested fairly regular, but they are allowed to be up to .5% out. That means for every £20's worth of fuel you buy you could only be getting £19.90 worth of fuel in your tank!

GB - Buy an electric car!

Tonker,
As you say almost everything has a 0.99 about it on the price tag. Presumably they have researched and seen that 99.99 sells better than 100.00. If I buy something at 99.99 and give them 100.00 I won't get any change because they scrapped pennies a good while ago.

I thinkTesco, on Bolton Road, is at £151.9 for diesel.
There's not much in it at the moment, they're all top whack!
I'm glad I've got rid of all my 'guzzlers'. Yesterday, I spoke to a friend of mine, a member on here, who runs a Bentley Arnage @10mpg!
