WIGAN PUBS
In my collection of photographs of Wigan Pubs I have one showing a man and two women stood in the doorway of a pub. The landlord, who I presume is the man on the photograph, is named as William Parkinson, named above the door. On the reverse of the photograph it says RAVEN. It isn't the RAVEN on Wallgate so I am wondering if it could be the RAVEN pub which was in Scholes? Can anyone who has access to the relevant documentation find out when William Parkinson was landlord of the RAVEN pub, and where it was. I would guess the date of the photo is around the 1900'S?
Thanks

The 1901 census lists William as a publican living in Prescott Street and born in 1868.

Thanks for the information but that throws up another conundrum... I think? 2 Bridge end St was a pub called the WHITE BULL which was on the corner of Bridge End St. and Prescott St.

William Parkinson was married to my 1st cousin twice removed Elizabeth Ratcliffe. In the 1911 and 1939 censuses I think he was in Ince and seems to have given up being a publican. John Ratcliffe (my great great uncle) had the White Bull in 1891, Joseph (John's son) had the pub in 1911. I would love to see the photograph that you have of William if you could make it available. There's another photograph of the pub from the railway line that you can see here

There were twenty-two pubs in Scholes after the war and men went on stag do's having a drink in every one of them.
Now, there is only one in the Earl of Balcarres and men now go all over the place on stag do's
How lifestyles have changed!
