Is having more than one job illegal?

In the past, I've woked my day job and done ' homers' or 'foreigners' as we call them, Its the same thing, there's no crime in making a bit more by working, Its better than claiming benefit or robbing to meet the bills,
I know its a different world , an MP saying he/she can't pay the bills out of £90.000 a year but, the have big houses, big cars, kids at uni, second homes, maids and butlers to keep, it must be very frustrating that, The Company Store or the food bank don't allow them in, like they do me,

Up until relatively recent times, MP's pay was traditionally very low, and the MP's topped up their income with very generous 'expenses' allowances, (fiddles) they could claim for anything

And they did

A right little gravy train

But greed got the better of them, and they went too far, claining fro bird tables etc and the papers got hold off it, the greedy idiots had spoiled it for the rest of them

The MP's expenses scandal.

Some of them ended up in jail

So they 'upped' the MP's salary, but 'downed' the MP's expenses claims, and probably made them worse off for it ...........

they are supposed to work for the people when they take office & no-one else . it names 10 tory members who are doin this & getting paid to ask questions on behalf of those that pay them . they shud be sacked .

I consider £82,000 per year plus allowances plus expenses for back bench MP's to be a very hansom salary for a part time job. If the job was not part time they would not be able to take on company directorships, do after dinner speaking and various other on the side money making activities.

On a frivolous note all MP's should be paid government minimum rates without allowances, their expenses should be tightly controlled and no other outside involvements. This would bring them down to reality and make them realise how a lot of people in this country have to live today.

If my wages were suddenly slashed and certain allowances and benefits removed my reply would be......."Reet! I am off, I am going to work for someone who values my worth, good luck finding a replacement"

I would imagine all our MPs would take a similar stance..........so where would that put us?

Or do you think everyone and anyone has got what it takes to do the job?

i repeat THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK FOR US . THEY GET A VERY HANSOME WAGE WITH PERKS LIKE SUBSIDISED FOOD & DRINK . they reckon that there is more beer supped in the house of commons than anywhere else on a daily basis . and if £82 ,000 with perks isnt good enough then good riddance i say .

"which labour politicians do this then" .

Martin Bond, Labour councillor, is a director of two or three companies which specialise in 1) providing work and housing to immigrants 2) supplies tolocal government organisations.

Shaun Woodward (ex Labour MP for St.Helens South) held several directorships and married into the wealthy Sainsburys family.

There's two for starters!

i see that there,s a "new addition" to the tory 2 jobs sleaze . nadhim zahwai who pocketed 1.3 million from oil company gulf keystone & never declared it because of a loophole in parliament ? . here,s 2 more grant shapps & lord snooty jabob rees-mogg . shapps got money from an airfields comsortium & used public money to lobby & block housing development on airstrips , no coinsidence that he owns a £100,000 airplane ? . rees mogg used his "off-shore" company to get £6 million in "loans" to refurbish his country home & paid hardly any tax on it ? . it,s ok for some in this tory sleze party .

broady,I have no doubt that Labour MP's have done it but I am positive not to the extent of Paterson and Cox!
I don't mind them doing paid and unpaid work if it benefits the community.but a limit has to be put on the amounts they can earn.

Fossil,
Whether you pinch an apple or a Rolls Royce it is still stealing. From afar the things I read are a disgrace. The current government have no moral compass. The PM is a buffoon in both his appearance and his actions. It is a long time to the next election but sadly at this stage I see no credible opposition.

Fossil,
I wasn’t implying stealing. Another way to put it is whether the job pays a million or £25000 it is still a second job. I said many years ago on here that the Government should buy/ build accommodations where all the MP’s stop when in London. This stops all the fiddles with second homes etc. They should be given rail vouchers to stop this claiming seven trips but only voting three times. As I said above the current government have no moral compass.

here,s a good 1 . tory mp Natalie Elphicke says marcus rashford shud concentrate on doin his day job . A Tory MP who suggested Marcus Rashford should stick to the day job has a second job.
Natalie Elphicke earns around £86 an hour in her work outside Parliament as the chair of the New Homes Quality Board.
She was handed a one-off £12,000 in November 2020, and since January has been paid just under £700 per week for eight hours’ work, on top of her £81k job as an MP.The organisation exists to “promote a new code for housebuilding standards” and Ms Elphicke has spent around 500 hours on the job since she was appointed in May 2020.
Ms Elphicke is one of scores of MPs with work outside Parliament, a practice ministers insist brings a “richness” to Parliamentary experience.
But she is now in the spotlight because of comments she made about Marcus Rashford.

MP’s are not legally employed. They qualify for payment and expenses as soon as they are elected. All payments are from the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority which is independent of Parliament.
I guess this arrangement leaves them free to take on second jobs. It’s then up to the electorate to decide who represents them at the next election.

Whups

If an MP looks after his constituency and has a second non lobbying job most of the voters would probably go along with it. If the opposite occurs the MP risks losing his seat at the next election.

lets face it gaffer this lot are blatently exploiting the system to their own advantage . they get elected then pursue their own interests & forget about the people who put them there in the 1st place . the sooner we get shut of this lot the better .
