So all those who have spent years saying how ugly the Galleries is, will now be mourning it's loss?

I think the proposals are necessary and will enhance to town centre. However, the architecture certainly won't. Absolutely awful, how can councillors think that those boxes and the industrial market roof enhance the appeal of the town?

"As far as parking is concerned there are also hopes that, as more and more cycle lanes are introduced around town, more people will ditch the car and come into Wigan by bike."

Fine. As long as they don't decide to buy anything.
Which begs the question, "why would anybody go to Wigan town centre in the first place"? !

BB, I had you down as knowing how things operate in this country of ours.
The councils in the UK, all of them, are conservative.
In Wigan borough, most of the councillors are labour. They are there to 'control' the council. As far as is reasonably practicable. Although they are still under government authority and manage the government's policies.
In this case, the government (UK), (conservative), have done deals with China, which include major construction contracts wherever they can place them. BCEGI is a Chinese government owned company.
The councillors (representing the civilians) don't have a say in the matter. Yes, they get to vote, as a formality, but they are told by the council's legal team how they must vote.
Labourness or Toryness doesn't enter into it. It's above that. It's THEM MEN!

Tonker,
As ever you are enlightening.
We don't always agree, but you always offer a certain way of thinking that many don't find easy to identify with.
Please keep provoking the less informed, as debate is healthy and proper info is essential.
