iv,e just been informed that recognition cameras have been installed at the top of landgate to charge a clean air fee to go into & out off wigan of £7-50 a time . anyone got thoughts on the matter ? .i dont know how true this is ? .

I can get what i need in Ashton & Bryn so why pay a charge to Wigan, I can also go on the bus for free to Wigan if i have to. Who do they think they are LONDON?

The wife wont be very pleased she goes to the Gym 4 times a week & its only a .few hundred yards passed Landgate.

I may be wrong but didn’t the people of Wigan vote against a congestion charge which if you read between the lines is basically what the clean air act is.This looks like the Metro and others riding roughshod over people’s wishes.Another revenue gathering exercise.

Affected vehicles include light goods vehicles and vans, heavy goods vehicles, buses, coaches, motorhomes, hackney cabs, private hire vehicles and minibuses, but not private cars.

Change “Wigan” to Greater Manchester”.
It’s only for commercial vehicles, laaaike.
If bentlegs’s Mrs. goes to the gym in a van, she’ll get charged, but only if the van is pre Euro6.
Or is it Euro4? I don’t know.
I do know a couple of tradesmen have said they are getting shut of their small vans and getting estate cars instead!

Thin end of wedge, they might be picking on commercial vehicles at first, but they are putting the technology in place, and that means at a whim they will be able to charge all vehicles using the road, a cash cow for the government.

Whups, who voted for the congestion charge? It was voted "No" and Burnham (Labour) brought it in by the back door with "Clean Air Charge". We voted "No" for Burnham (GM Mayor), extra unnecessary charge on taxpayers there.

i dont care who did what but since the torys have been in charge virtually all the services have been privitised thru the back door.and to be honest your vote counts for zip with this lot.

Anyroadup. Them cameras don't recognise cars. They recognise registration numbers.

Tonks: I have a relative who has a garage and he said he has sold his van and will get an estate car. Surely the number recognition will find the number registered to a business, not private?

I can't see any exemptions for Euro 4 (etc) as in the London Zone recently brought in. Will every van etc have to pay, say a brand new petrol / diesel small van?

Inside Greater Manchestern 'clean air zone', owners of high-polluting, non-compliant, HGVs, buses, taxis, private hire vehicles, light goods vehicles and minibuses would have to pay a daily penalty.

A penalty of £100 for HGVs and buses, and £7.50 for taxis and private hire vehicles, would come into effect from 2021, followed by a £7.50 charge for vans and minibuses from 2023.

Compliant vehicles would have to comply with Euro 6 emissions regulation, which rules out most pre-2013 HGVs and pre-2016 diesel vans. There are currently 11,000 non-compliant HGVs and 77,000 non-compliant vans registered in Greater Manchester.

Private cars

Despite vocal opposition from some environment and community groups, private cars would be exempt. Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) explained that penalising the 285,000 non-compliant cars registered in the city region would not reduce air pollution levels any quicker, and would disproportionately affect the [removed, admin] deprived communities.

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “This is a balanced package of measures to clean up our air without punishing businesses or Forei ....... hmmmmm., ...... deprived communities.

So far, Platty, private vehicles aren't included.

Think of this - according to government figures, "77,000 non-compliant (pre 2016) vans registered in Greater Manchester.".
That, taken that each van is worth an average of £2,000, is £154 million worth of vehicles that are going to be useless in their local area and, should they allbe used illegally, the penalties would amount to £3 million a working week!

I wonder if any compensation will be due?

So Tonks, if everyone complies, all this has been a waste of money and they'll have to recoup it from all the good people.

What about the pizza delivery bikes and takeaway deliveries? They're businesses and the guy who delivers round here drives a rust bucket. Also, the Amazon/ebay deliveries using private cars?

I give it 2 years and the inclusions will sneak in slowly.
