Honorary Degree's ??

I was just enquiring has to what is the worth of these Honorary Degree's that are being dished out , I noticed in today's paper that the latest one is given to Marcus Rashford , I would really like to know what for ??
How long has he had to study?? etc.I ask this because my grandson is having to sit his studies for a minimum of 3 years to try attain his .Do they have any standing or any significance ???? GB

Really they are an advertisement for the university/college. They don't mean anything to anyone and if they do put it in writing they should put afterwards 'honoris causa' or 'honorary' to show it hasn't been obtained through successful completion of acadamic programme.
It's a bit like the reason for honours to the Lords, granted for outstanding services to the public, etc.
When I went to my son's graduation ceremony, the guy granted an honorary degree to that Uni (can't remember his name) had a proper degree from Oxford, but he gave a magnificent speech, he was in the armed forces.

It costs a fortune with all the regalia involved…not needed…the guy’s done well without all the crap
