Fuel shortages

It seems that supplies of petrol/diesel has started to arrive at forecourts. I drove past a couple yesterday, no queue's, all very orderly. BUT, have the prices increased ? Our local one seems to have leapt 8p a litre from before the mad scramble. Anyone else noticed this going on ?

Yes, it's called 'profiteering' even though it is being denied, and the problem has been caused because of the 'just in time' method of everything these days, whereby a petrol station would get a delivery of fuel which would fill its tanks to full, and they would be fully stocked, and when that fuel was running out, the petrol station would order another delivery, to fill their underground tanks, that doesn't happen now, the petrol stations have more frequent deliveries, and so they carry less stocks of fuels, the idea being that the fuel goes out of the tanker and into vehicles fuel tanks, in as short of time as possible, and folk tend to buy fuel as they use it, I do that, I don't drive around with a full tank of fuel, unless I am going on a long run somewhere.

The 'just in time system' of supply and demand is by its nature a 'precarious' system, and this crisis proves that, just a {{rumour}} of fuel shortages has created a supply and demand crisis, so maybe it should be encouraged for all retail, wholesale and manufacturers to carry more stocks, so as to avoid problems like we have seen over the last week.

My eldest lad works in technical support for a company called Fairbanks, in Skelmersdale. They monitor fuel stocks all over the World. It makes the job a lot easier.

My Dad, who owned Prospect garage in Standish , never put the price of fuel up as long as there was petrol in the huge tank.

I would not like anything serious to happen in this country because has it stands now it proves how selfish the people have become 1st the Covid pandemic when people were fighting for toilet rolls etc .Now people fighting over petrol and greedy owners of petrol stations hiking the price to about £3 a LITRE and people paying it. Last week I was told of people queueing to put 1-2 litres in their tanks. There are not that many people who normally use a tank full of fuel every week(some taxis maybe) and drivers who clock up 20000/40000 miles per year for their jobs

I was listening to Boris on the BBC, and he came out with a good point, and that is that EU immigration caused the undercutting of wages of HGV drivers, which drove down the conditions of the industry, with less facilities, and less regard for the job, and now that wages are going up, that will improve things.
As he said we need British lorry drivers and to attract them into the job, they need to be paid a decent wage, and not undercut by some Romanian idiot, and then there is the question of 'enforcement' how many of them foreign johnny drivers, don't even have a LGV licence, they are using false documents, and if they get caught committing an offence, they just bugger off abroad, and get replacement false documents, they escape justice

All these are the sorts of the reasons why I voted to leave the EU.

I have just got home from ESSEX seeing my daughter & G/children and what i'm going to write may or may not get be barred , but here goes on seeing these greedy bastards putting 10/20/ and in one case i saw 75 pence on a litre of petrol for me these garage proprietors should be rounded up put against a wall and shot . There is NO fuel shortage so why do these excuse's for human's not be punished ???? I have had to get this of my chest for i cannot stand these sorts of people .. GB

The commentators in the know are seeing a revolution taking place. The aim is to force employers to increase UK wages and to stop low paid immigration from undercutting pay and conditions here. Low pay automatically uses social security benefits as a wages subsidy for employers.
In 2019 over 4.5 million recipients were paid £5000 each in housing benefit, costing around £22 billion.

Oh for goodness sake, is Brexit going to be blamed for everything. This incident with petrol is because some idiot said don't panic - then the great british public did panic and set up a run on the petrol pumps and create a shortage that was never there in the first place..

I got petrol yesterday no queuing.

who cares gaffer as the countrys in a mess & there was never anything like this before brexit . we have a inept government who only look after their own & the people are just putting up with it because of the covid excuse .that brexit vote was deemed on bigotory & nothing else , well i hope they are satisfied for bringing us down this road . more to come .

Did my shopping at Asda this morning, was expecting difficulty getting in by the fuel station, nothing! That is two places I have expected difficulty but both no problem at all. Also no empty shelves everything as normal, maybe a little low on frozen fish. The only thing missing was NO beggars at the main door.

I have only just seen your post gaffer, and I agree that in the long term wages and conditions of lorry drivers will improve, and other sectors which have been using cheap foreign labour will also have to pay more wages and improve conditions for their employees.

We were leaving the EU long before we knew anything about it. We were leaving in 2013,when all the deals with China were agreed.

tell yoo wot i agree with 1stroke & it,s stopping all the rich & big businesses sending their money made here out of the country & paying either very little or no tax at all . if that happened we would,nt be in this state & enough money for all . nobody says anything when jacob reese mogg or any of there money rich front benchers do it ? .

I understand one reason for fuel stations running out causing panic is the introduction of E10 petrol. Petrol stations reduced their stocks of E5 unleaded to facilitate the changeover. This caused shortages that triggered a run on fuel - both petrol and diesel. Things should even out in a couple of weeks. Don't expect prices to fall though - that's a different story.
