They should never have been privatised in the first place.

Great news, Jacqueline!
We've started looking after your energy bills.
As you know, we move you to the best deal we can find every year, so you can never be overcharged again. This is how it always should have been.
Peter they were featured on Dragons Den if you watch it
As part of that service, we've initiated your switch - and you're saving a packet too!

A lot of these comparison sites don't show deals by insurance / energy companies etc that don't pay them commission. So you may not be getting the cheapest deal available. A lot of companies are not on comparison sites. Direct Line for example.

I hate to say i told you so !! But akin to what Tommy TS has said i agree with what he say's , As for myself back in the day there was only two (2) in this region that was NORWEB FOR YOUR ELECTRIC AND BRITISH GAS .. MY wife and i made a choice back when we first wed which was we will stay with British Gas and FOR while it lasted NORWEB FOR OUR ELECTRIC , Then when Norweb changed OR Closed , we went with BRITISH GAS FOR BOTH GAS & ELECTRIC. Been with them all these years and just kept away from all the other MICKY MOUSE COMPANIES. I had an idea that something would come and bite one in the ASS .......GB

Whupsy
If it makes yoo feel better, I will say that it was the Tory government of Margaret Thatcher, elected in 1979 who decided to privatise the utilities.
I disagreed with it then, and I disagree with it now.
Replied: 24th Sep 2021 at 12:57

peterg i,ve just moved to octopus energy on a gas & leccy contract.
Replied: 27th Sep 2021 at 01:33
Good move whups!.
I have been with Octopus for 2 years and have stuck with them knowing that elsewhere MAY have been cheaper.
The main reason is that when I had a problem ,of my own making I might add,I was able to contact them almost immediately and it was sorted there and then.
Unlike my experiences with Scottish power and Npower who were very difficult to deal with.

I will probably switch to Octopus when this turmoil dies down.

Just been reading that the companies taking on the customers from the suppliers who have ceased trading will have to purchase (more expensive) energy to meet the greater demand they now will cater for.
The cost of this more expensive energy is to be recovered by charging ALL customers more for their power!
So, the defunct suppliers took the profits, but it is WE who were bearing the risk.
It is the same old story over again: 'Privatised profits & socialised costs/risk'!
When will we ever learn?
Replied: 28th Sep 2021 at 17:48
Apparently, we now jointly owe £826 Million: the cost to us of bearing a risk transferred from shareholders to the public.
