I'm surprised they haven't opened an Aldi in Wigan already.

Well there is another kid on the block who are opening Merd Supermarkets

Apparently they are from Russia, where there are a lot of Merd Supermarkets

So I wonder when we will get a Merd Supermarket in Wigan, which will no doubt be selling crap

was,nt there a debate on wether or not gorners was big enough to have parking facilities ? .

I think the problem with the Gorners site would be access with it being on the corner of a busy junction

I think that the old Gorners site is too near to the existing Ashton store, for it to make any business sense to open an Aldi there, if the Ashton store was over shopped (too busy for its size) then they might look for larger premises, Lidl have done that in Golborne, they built a bigger store just up the road from the existing Lidl, which is now something else, but the Ashton store is definitely not over shopped, so maybe it is North Ashton which they are thinking about, the Downhall Green, Garswood, Bryn catchment areas, because all they have in those areas are the expensive convenience stores

Lidl are supposed to be building a new store off Princess Road, almost directly across from the existing Aldi. Nothing seems to be hatching though.

Truth be known, Ashton is in a good position for supermarkets. There's loads already, all within a couple of miles, or a five minute drive, of Ashton. There's bus services to all, for those who don't drive.

The traffic is only bad at 'going home time' and, like I said, there's bus services from Ashton centre to all supermarkets.
Supermarkets within 10 minutes of Ashton =

Asda ...... x 2
Tesco ....... x 2
Sainsbury's ...... x 1
Aldi ....... x 3
Lidl ....... x 2
Iceland ........ x 4

I partially agree with our readers who have commented on this topic ,the only reservation i have of which i will probably be slated is that these two store's ALDI & LIDL are owned by the two german brother's and here again all the profit's are flowing out of the UK, as with a lot of other businesse's the EU keep on banging Britain but they don't complain about their companies opening up over here and taking all profit's out .......Like i say it is good news for our own people getting jobs so good luck to them ! GB . Lidl is a separate company from Aldi and has no connection with the Albrecht family who own Aldi.

I know a couple of people whom have recently moved to Austria to take up positions with Aldi. A lad from Wigan and a lady from Liverpool.
Apparently the company is called Hofer In Austria.

There were two Albrecht brothers, one is deceased. Each brother had a regional responsibity for a geographical area known as Aldi Sud and Aldi Nord, South and North. Lidl is a separate company with no connections to the Albrecht family.

They pay above the normal supermarket rates because you are classed as self employed and have to arrange your own tax and NI contributions

Go to Tesco in Wigan on a Saturday morning and enjoy the experience.

Go to Aldi or Lidl, and come out suicidal.

They suck.

I think there is a problem with the site across the road from a from Aldi in Princess road it was the old gas works and has been stood empty for years, I think there would have been something on there by now if it was safe. If Lidl do build on there i can see both Managers haveing a scrap in,t middle of Princess Rd

That's been on the cards for many years. In fact, they must be so confident of getting it passed that they've already started groundwork!

I presume this is where there is that rather grand entrance facade to an empty field and a pile of dirt, which was when someone started to build on that site, and the council jumped in and stopped it, and that must have been 20yrs ago.
