Another one bites the dust.

Started by: jathbee (11463)

Debenhams closes it's doors for the last time on the 8th of May.
Another nail in the coffin for Wigan town centre.
The online shopping site, Boohoo have bought it but will not keep stores open.
A blow for the shoppers like me who prefer the shopping experience.
These sites remind me of the old fashioned catalogue shopping, never liked those either.
I prefer to examine and try goods on before I buy.

I believe market hall is closing at the end of the year as well...they won't be able to fit that in the Grand Arcade.

A sad state of affairs. Let's hope we have some kind of regeneration in the very near future.

Aussie94.
Why are you so negative about the UK . Australia has many problems too, it isn't the paradise that you make it out to be. Yours like most other countries, have their fair shared problems.

Whups. I went in there last week. Most of the bargains had already gone.
I managed one or two cut price items but won't be going again.
Looks very sad indeed.

It is mismanagement, pure and simple, brcause folk are queueing round the block to shop at Primark, and that can't be blamed on online shopping can it.

The store was far too big, as was M and S, costing a fortune in rent, business rates and other overheads.

To try and get back to the original topic of this post:
- I regularly visited Debenham's and it was one of my favourite stores. On average, I visited Debenham's once a week. I really liked the sport section in the basement area and often purchased items there.
Also, I bought many records from the music department, both LPs and singles. I preferred the music department when it was on the ground floor and in the corner of the building - I think, that part of the building had once been the wines and spirits department. But, I am definitely unsure about the ownership and whether it belonged to Debenham's or it was only part of the building.
Some people may recall the music department being where I have just mentioned and/or recall the department being in the basement; to the left as you walked down the stairs from Debenham's side entrance.
I also found the perfume and cosmetics department on the left as you entered via the main entrance very useful, because I usually found those Christmas presents for the women of all ages in my family - also, for the nice girlfriends I have been so fortunate to have had in my life.
Additionally, I spent many enjoyable moments with family or friends in Debenham's upstairs cafe.
The last time I visited Debenham's, which was not too long ago, I found it very disappointing as it had lost much of the beauty it had once had. The quality had greatly faded and it looked poor and unclean.
Hopefully, the building is going to be kept and the new owners are going to return it to the splendour it once had.
Let us try and keep those architectural splendours of Wigan instead of letting the bulldozers destroy the historical beauty of our town.

Unless Amazon decide to open shops I don't think there is a company big enough to take over those premises, sadly.

Reading in the national paper that a lot of town centres will go down the same route has Wigan and replace shop units with housing and cinemas and bowling alleys. Who came up with the idea 1st and the rest will be clones of it

wigan town centres problems.
1 too many retail shops in the town centre for its own good
2 no free car parking.
3 a bus station thats at the bottom of an hill for old folk to get in and out from..
finally a council who cant see the wood for the trees.
open up the town center to traffic .let folk park for twenty minutes free so they can nip into shops and out again quickly, restoring footfall.
back to the good old days
