Domestic wind turbines

Has anyone got one of these , or checked them out, I been looking at them a year or so now....wish I'd had one last piggin week Apparently you can sell any excess energy to our usual suppliers.........wonder wot they pay hehehe!

They're not cost efficient and are only useful if you don't have power connected.

Thats not wot I've read Tonker.I first saw these about 18 months ago in a magazine that promotes new ideas etc. Check the inverter they use, etc.They really have come a long way since I first read about them. Its costy to set em up, but they are and have come way down in price, I been watching them on ebay hehehe

Buy a cheap one then, off e-bay, and see. It'll probably run your christmas tree lights next year.

Ive chatted with boat owners at red rock canal a couple have the wind turbine fitted on the boat

Cheers JJ , Will do that, I also believe grants are sometimes available to help you get them installed......so they worth checking out eh.

The boat people will have a diesel engine, which they run to charge a bank of batteries, which are put through an inverter to power their stuff. The wind generator will be 'helping' the diesel engine by contributing an amount of charge to the batteries, it won't do it on it's own. It's cheaper than diesel, I suppose. A lot of people in Spain, out of town with no supply, have them, but all need backup. Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear, especially when someone is trying to sell you something.

There was something in one of the daily papers a couple of week's ago about a bloke and his wife who had erected one of these contraption's in his garden, then he got a letter off his local council telling him to remove it until he had applied for planning permission to erect the damn thing,
He went through the usual channels and was told it would cost around 6oo quid to apply and recieve the appropriate certification to erect the thing in his garden,
The bloke in question said " Nothing was said about such planning permission when I bought the wind turbine from B+Q, and no refund was offered when I took the damn thing back "
It just goes to show, that it may be eco friendly, but the damn council always want their cut

True Dave, the site I was reading said something about planning permission, it likely depends on your location, and also how high the thing is.Some are huge!

I was heading up to Barrow in Furness in the truck today, and as I glanced over to my right across the up till now unspoiled hill's, there was around ten of these huge wind turbines in what we are lead to believe are called a "Wind Farm "
They looked like some sort of huge alien's blotting the landscape, I pulled up at a fuel stop and got talking to a local truckdriver, I pointed the turbines out and commented on how much electricity they would have generated in the strong wind's last week.
He laughed and told me that when the wind is strong the turbines have to be stopped to avoid the bearing's overheating and seizing up, I couldn't believe it,
So if it is too windy, they can't be used, ha ha very strange
