Has anyone done their family tree? Can anyone tell me what is the best site to use and,how to start,how much,how easy, how difficult,and what results.

some are free some not,start with what you know about your family and stories you heard as a youngster this is always the best info and ask other family members what they know.I must say it is very time consumeing and not always easy but don't give up the rewards can be fantastic.The only other thing i will say is check every thing twice because there is nowt worse than finding you have put someone in your tree who has got the right names and dates then finding the bugger is nowt to do with you.

Thats what I am scared of we've got a few skeletons in the cupboard that I know of, how many I dont know of is anybodys guess.

Thats all part of the fun boys, You can't change who you are and what your familys did or didn't do.

I have started on mine. One thing though, its all consuming and i have had some restless nights over it. Its hard to shut down has you will be faced with all this info and it can become all consuming. Its fascinating at the same time though.
Good sites are 1901 census, you can even find out who lived in your house thats if your house is an old one. Some sites you have to subscribe.

my youngest started our tree(male side)4 years ago, and still hard at it. we/she kicked of at the mormon church in chorley, and has since been to bow lane preston, liverpool record offices(seamen)copenhagen migrant offices(dont go back very far the danes)she is now back to 1646. and has come up against a brick wall(again) you will find many of these, but soldier on. dont get private seekers on the job...i do not trust them one leeetle bittt.for the fee they charge, they will conjure up a LORD or LADY, and thats supposed to keep you happy. parish records are very helpful. if you think you are goint to do this in a matter of a year or even years...think again coccium, its a long slog. we found a few interesting forebears so far in our tree, but as yet, we havent found any hanging from said tree.

I started mine nearly 20 years ago and still at it. Suggest you enrol for one of the History Shop workshops ( see http://www.wlct.org/Culture/Heritage/fhistory.htm) held in the old library I think every Wednesday. They at least start you on the right track to unravel the mystery of how to go about it. It doesn't cost too much (about £2.50) but will be well worth it

One of my nephews is doing ours,I don't know how far he has got but even for last 50 years there's a lot to count.I mentioned it to eldest sister when she was visiting in '99 and she bought me shield with the family coat of arms,I have a photo of it but where to post it is problem unless I remove one of my pictures on my profile.

I wouldn't be game to begin on my family tree, seeing as I was from an O'Neill and O'Reilly and the Irish having a history of families with no less than a dozen kids. If I am not related to half of Ireland than I'll eat my drawers.

problem with chasing irish ancestry is this...during the easter uprisings, the ira burnt down the dublin town hall???countless records went up in smoke. for the main part, you would have to go to the parishes, or forget about it.

Genes reunited isn't a bad site. You can get lots of help from other members who will look things up for you.

I have done mine back to 1547 on my Fathers side and 1703 on the Lancashire side ,found one ancester served with Drake and all the way down from 1547 to date related in serving at Sea my Father broke te chain.,also found a lot of wives died in childbirth with their first child , and then you have to try and find what happened to that child , you cannot leave it alone as at every turn there is something different. This is something as a small child I was taken to the cemetary every Sunday to put flowers on Granma 's grave , I even had to go in Wedding Dress to put my flowers on said Granma's grave have only recently found out she is NOT buried there at all she is in a Large family Grave, about 1/2 a mile away, and the reason the wrong Grave (it was a cousin of my G Mother-- a Molloy) was because Women in those days didnt usually attend Funerals so the brothers came back and probably said something like Molloy so hence we attended the wrong grave with my mother and all her sisters all went to the wrong grave and me complete in Wedding dress and Veil , doesm;t bare thinking about , the brothers never seemed to go

to those who have checked records, did you ever wonder why so many females signed their name with an X
twas because a female who could write, was considered a threat, and very few employers would hire them. (trouble makers)
