Where's Wallace?
"A Gromit exhibition has proved so popular in Bristol that health and safety officials have been called in to manage the crowds.
It started as a simple idea of dotting 80 Gromit statues around the city centre to help raise funds for Bristol Children's Hospital, the challenge being to find them all.
Public response has 'surpassed' expectations and all of the Gromits have now been housed in a large gallery for people to come and see them under one roof."

What's he doing in Brighton, Mache? (www.wallaceandgromit.com)

I fell for that, Mache - I was looking for a Wallace statue in Brighton.
The Gromit statues are being sold by auction on 3rd October and are expected to fetch thousands of pounds each. (I've got my eye on the glitzy one.)

Bolton has elephants.
I think it started in Salzburg with the cows.

I also like the gold Grommit. I'm not keen on all of them though, some are hideous - as were some of the superlambananas (wasn't sure how many b's there).
Love Wallace and Grommit.

"There are many elephants, and castles, in and around Bolton, most inspired from the Coat of Arms."
I'd forgotten about those, Kenee. www.bolton.org.uk
If we use Wigan's Coat of Arms as a starting point - County Borough and Metropolitan Borough - how about a Wigan lion?

It'd look nice int front garden.
....although I could see that gold one being stripped and weighed in.
Replied: 24th Sep 2013 at 11:45
I'm not sure it's real gold, Veg Grower, but I'm sure it'll be precious to its prospective owner.
Julie Vernon - "Golden Gromit"
'My design is inspired by golden Buddhas in Thailand, where sculptures are transformed into objects of glory by covering them in gold mosaic. I wanted to turn Gromit into a highly decorative piece using gold mosaic tesserae, creating an object of pride, splendour and beauty.'
I've just discovered one of the Gromit statues is called 'Where's Wallace? - designed by Martin Handford, the creator of 'Where's Wally'.

Trying to think of a decent statue for Wigan.
Struggling and would throw out of the window andy stereotypical pie attempts
Replied: 24th Sep 2013 at 14:49
Do you not think a lion would be a decent statue, Dostaf?
Replied: 24th Sep 2013 at 14:54
Yes. But we've already got one at Haigh.
Originally from the gas works, I believe. I was thinking along the lines and a stylised doings like the banana.
I love those coat of arms lions (general, not Wigan), which are really leopards.

That's true, PeterP - be great if we could get Nick Park to deign a statue for us.
I know we already have a lion statue at Haigh, Dostaf - I'm suggesting Wigan should take pride in that association and have many more.
(That's what Bolton did with its elephants. )
I love the stylised idea like that of the Superlambananas.
Erontquay, how about a lion design covered with clocks and called 'Dandy-Lion-Clocks?

If I were cynical, I'd make a comment about t'Council providing us with some white elephants in the town, Jo Anne.
But I'm not, so I won't.
Some lion statues would be lovely.
There are some beauties at Saltaire (Bradford)
Replied: 24th Sep 2013 at 15:49
Thinking about it, there are also lions either side of Bolton's town hall steps.
Replied: 24th Sep 2013 at 15:52
I'm not thinking quite as grand as those, but the more easily reproduced basic statues, like the Superlambananas and Gromits, Dostaf.

I wouldn't laugh at the lion, Erontquay, just I case it gives us a stern ticking off.
I was actually thinking along the lines of Parsley the Lion earlier, due to your recent link to The Herbs, Dostaf.

I'm struggling to think of another simply styled one, Jo Anne.
Can only think of Lenny, but he wouldn't really transfer into a statue.
Replied: 24th Sep 2013 at 16:16
Simba's a good one, Erontquay.
When we went to the art exhibition in April, there was work on display by someone who taught cartoon art classes at Sunshine House, Scholes - he was very talented.

Would they all have to be synchronised with Wigan Parish Church clock though, Mache?
Replied: 24th Sep 2013 at 18:12
Out of true by at least one minute fifteen seconds.
That's the clock, not the angle of dangle of a banana.
Replied: 24th Sep 2013 at 18:14

Not to worry.

Both Dostaf's 18:37 and my post at 18:47 work now, Mache - I bet Dostaf slipped up on the banana skin earlier.

"Gromberry" - Simon Tozer"
'After working for a number of years in London as a scenic painter and mural-ist, Simon moved to Bristol in 2002. He now works as a printmaker, producing mainly screen prints. Simon's prints are often humorous and the subjects are usually animals, people and sometimes forms of transports.'
Diarmuid Gavin - "Oops a Daisy"
'Diarmuin Gavin is an award winning garden designer, author and presenter, best known for presenting Gardeners' World and the Chelsea Flower Show. Diarmuid describes his design style as exuberant, whacky and quirky, and at other times green, tranquil and gentle.'

Kenee's link
"King Bladud's Pigs in Bath was a 2008 public art event to celebrate Bath, its origins and its artists - and provide residents and visitors with artistic enjoyment.
Over one hundred decorated pig sculptures were on display throughout the summer around Bath and beyond. The pigs have now all gone from the streets and been sold at auction, for the benefit of Bath's Two Tunnels Project."

"The pigs have now all gone from the streets"
Not strictly true, I saw that one on Saturday.
Replied: 7th Oct 2013 at 11:07
Thanks, Kenee. I've been trying to find out more about the Pig in the pic and instead found out this :
Lions of Bath - 'Pride in our City': a Lion project with similar aims.
Full size lion sculptures were displayed in the summer of 2010 and went on to raise over £65,000 for charity.
Replied: 7th Oct 2013 at 11:28
I thought the Lions would have made more than that - given the area.
Perhaps if they had auctioned them off like the Grommits they would have earned far more.
I see Wells in Somerset is doing the same with swans.
Replied: 7th Oct 2013 at 11:35
King Bladud's Pigs 'raised at least £200,000, Veg Grower, and then the Lions of Bath £65,000 just a few years later.
'The Swans of Wells had over £110,000 worth of bids made for the fabulous flock.' (2012)
The Gromits did do phenomenonally well in comparison with £2,357,000.
I think Gromit, as a commodity, was always going to be the biggest animal though.
Replied: 7th Oct 2013 at 12:19

What next I wonder?...
Replied: 7th Oct 2013 at 15:26

Only due to you mentioning the Pig in Bath, Kenee. I love these kind of statues.
"Wigan should have Wallaces" not William Wallaces though, unless there's room along Scot Lane.
I haven't found anything out about William Wallace being a Welshman, Tom1303. What makes you think he was?
