Not specifically Wigan But something most Wigan boys have done. We were too tight to put a penny on the line We used half pennies....
Another of ROB ROWLAND'S superb nostalgic paintings.

Forgot to say. I don't think I ever found the half penny, after the train had run over it..

Beautiful but dangerous..what we did in the fifties!

My much-older brother Ronnie, (born 1933 so 19 years my senior), told me about him and his mates doing this with pennies, and also with old keys. He also told me he once found a half-crown on Manchester Road, Higher Ince....you can bet your life he didn't put THAT on the rail-track! He was about ten years old so would have been the early 1940s....just imagine the wealth to a little lad back then!

Ashamed now to say that I too along with mates of the time did it with halfpenny's and old nails we'd found, we were always amazed as to how flattened and big they became, and also very hot too.
We never did have any thoughts of the dangers either to us or to the trains.

We used to put pennies on the line and when we found them they were all shapes but never round.
