Does anyone recall the name of the coal merchant from long ago ?.
Looks like a Morris T-type and was run by Dick Evans of Haydock.
Did you drive one Garry?Nice to hear from you.
Garry, Thank you for your info of the Morris lorry. I reckon it would
have been new in the 1920s, and was capable of carrying about 1 ton.
Thanks gents.
At my time as a street coal delivery man I've driven Austin k4, Austin FG (threepenny bit), Bedford TK. Hard work but loved it. Now, almost a dead trade.
Thank you Garry for your kind comments. You mentioned an Austin K4,
my Dad drove one of these in the late 1950s for Liverpool Co-op Dairies
and when we got on to the former M.O.D ammunitions factory opposite
Kirkby railway station, Dad would put me behind the wheel until we got
to the exit, I was about 14 at the time. Just 3 years later, after my 17th
birthday, I joined the Territorial Army, and soon after, I passed my driving
test on an Army vehicle. I never attended a driving school, and I drove
HGV lorries from the age of 21 until I was 71, including 2 years on Ribble
buses in the late 1960s when I emigrated to Wigan. I am still in Wigan.
Cheers, Ray.
