PeterP. In my photograph album it was the correct way. Why, this the result, I have no idea.
I believe the National Registration Identity Card finished being issued, in 1952.
Id cards before my time but I wonder if they should be brought back into use
I remember seeing one of these in my Grandmother's old tin, where old photos were kept. I'm not sure if it's still there.
Were they introduced during the war - I have often wondered.
I still have mine , when we moved to leyland green road my mother had to take it to have the address changed,
Veronica. I believe it was all to do when rationing was centre stage. I believe rationing finished in 1952.
Thanks Albert, I never thought of asking!
Veronica, Identity cards were introduced in 1939 in conjunction with the National Register of the population because of the war. As Albert says, they were scrapped in 1952. Rationing of food ended in phases, sweets in 1953 for instance. I remember our teacher even allowed us to eat toffees in class on the day it ended - but most of us had none anyway. All rationing finally ended in July 1954.
Yes I remember when sweets came off the ration. I also remember my mam giving me some 'points' for toffees. I recall running to the shop and thinking the toffees were free and you didn't need money!
Identity Cards.

Despite them being discussed by consecutive governments, it seems that they won't be compulsory again.
As the Government has decided there's masses of fraudulent voting going on, so we will need to identify ourselves when we go to vote - and millions of people have neither a passport nor a driving licence to produce as proof of identity - they're going to have to bring ID cards in.
There were 2 types of ID cards issued t least. I have just found mine that was issued May 1945 and was valid until May 1961. The card states for "under sixteen years" and was registered a few days after I was born in my name but Father had to sign it on the back as parent. By rights once I'd reached 16 years old, I had to apply & produce this for a new card within 7 days. Good job they did away with them but like you say Rev perhaps they should be reintroduced in someway. I always carry my driving licence with me as proof of who I am.
