A photo posted by Stuart Liptrot some time ago (Item #: 31564). It ‘appealed’ to me since as a youngster in the early 1950’s I played for St Catharine’s Primary School on the same pitch on the ‘Rec’. I wonder if anyone out there recognises their grandfather or great grandfather from the colourised version and individual portraits I’ve posted.

I was at St Catharine's in 1940 and ought to recognise all of them but I cannot
I take it that Eddie Rudd would be there
I started there in 1937 and by 1940 would have been in Miss Gaskell's class

Hi Donald, Eddie Rudd was my standard 3 teacher in 1952, he was 21 years old and naturally he ran the football team. However l think he would only be a youngster of 9 or 10 when this photo was taken.

Yes Keith.Eddie was two years ahead of me at WGS,but these boys look very young to a 92year old

You, me and sadly the late Eddie who passed away far too early share the fact that we all attended St Catharines and the WGS schools. I also remember Eddie playing wing half for Horwich RMI, from memory he was a fine intelligent player, in the style of Gordon Milne.

Keth.We are both wrong about Eddie's age
He was born on 7 Jan 1929which would explain the year when he was School Captain at WGS

Donald, just to add a little to Eddie’s story. He died in November 1968 (the year I left College), aged 39. At the time he was Headmaster of Garston C of E School (Liverpool) and left behind a young family. His father, to the best of my knowledge, was a caretaker and Sidesman at St Catharine’s Church. They lived in Leader Street which was overlooked by the church. A lovely man, taken far too soon.

Very interesting to me to hear about Eddie Rudd , he used to come to our house in the fifties to pick my brother Ernie Roby up on his motorcycle when they both played for Horwich R M I I didn’t know he had passed away so young , tragically my brother also passed away in his early forties.

Eddie's Family were very prominent at the church
His father and grandfather were Vergerc.I remember the parents well

Our grandfathers' signatures appear next to each other on the nomination papers for Mr Neville in 1910 the last Conservative MP for the town

So interesting to hear more about Eddie. When I was his class in 1951/52, I remember being told that Sheila Hopper, who was seated ahead of me, was related to him. I wonder if Eddie married her sister Florence G Hopper in 1952, she lived in Cecil Street with was next to Leader Street.

Eddie married Gertrude Hopper cousin to Audrey Yates, who was in my class
