This is believed to be my 4x great grandmother, Ann (Hathaway) Shipley (1831-1918), but I don't have 100% proof that the photo is her -- if it isn't then I presume she is a relative of mine. This photo is in my possession in the USA. She was born in Saul, Gloucestershire about June 1831, a daughter of William Hathaway and Elizabeth (Mallett) Hathaway Turner. She married Henry Shipley on 29 November 1852 at the Parish Church of Saint Luke, Bilston, Staffordshire. They had at least 6 children. The eldest child was my 3x great grandmother, Emma Jane (Shipley) Brown (1853-1948). Henry died 03 April 1869 at Stubshaw Cross, Ashton in Makerfield, Lancashire from burns he received in a coal pit. He's buried at the St. Thomas Churchyard in Ashton in Makerfield. Ann died 22 December 1918 at 109 Scholefield Lane, Wigan. She is buried at the Lower Ince Cemetery, Ince in Makerfield, Lancashire. This photo was sent to David Brown in Nicholas County, West Virginia. David was her son-in-law, my 3x great grandfather.

What a lovely old photo you have in your possession. I lived very near Scholefield Lane years ago and there’s still some old terraced houses left on one side of the road. Next time I go to Wigan I’ll look at the numbers. If 109 Scholefield Lane is still there I will take a picture of the house and post it. My grandmother would have been in her 30’s at the time of your ancestor’s demise and wore a very similar dress in a photo I have of her.
Harrogate St wasn’t very far away either.

I just love these photos of people of the past. So often they were left in drawers or just thrown away.
Keith has just posted a wonderful colourisation it is amazing.

This lady shares a few geographical locations with myself, albeit several generations apart. She married in Bilston, Staffordshire, some 14 miles from where I’ve lived for the past 52 years. She also lived in Scholefield Lane where I attended St Catharines School in the 1950’s, She’s buried at Lower Ince cemetery, as are my parents and maternal grandparents and maternal great grandparents. Finally she survived the Zeppelin bombing of Wigan on April 12 1918, as did my grandmother. The raid demolished a large gas light at the junction of Scholefield Lane and Birkett Bank where I lived some 32 years later.
