Circa late 1950s but it recalls the 1970s for me. The only actual real live cricket match we ever got to play at Hindley and Abram Grammar School was against Rivington Grammar just here on this field. This was our Test Match. The Big One.
I can really only remember playing there twice. Mostly, it seemed, it was rained off or the coach didn't come. I did get a hat trick though - one caught at leg slip, despite juggling with it, and two lbws. They were on the back foot and plumb. They were, also, given by our teacher and it didn't go down too well. Muffled coughing and the raising of eyebrows by their square leg umpire.
I should say that I was hoisted over the trees for six as well - just for authenticity - it's a distant memory.
