When we were kids some 10 or more years later the park was still a bit of a stately place with fountains and statues and very formal flowerbeds. No walking on the grass never mind playing football and the Park Keeper was a bit strict too.
I remember the slides and swings, the well- subscribed bowling green and tennis courts by the Parkie's hut. No misbehaviour of any kind. Everyone was kicked out at dusk and the grand front gates locked shut.
I don't remember a bandstand, sorry Joseph there's no photo. I hope these will kindle a few memories
Yes they do DK thank you,the "Bandstand" was on the big field just through the little path from the fountian on the other photo.I dont remember that statue on the fountain,it was a little cherub boy having a pee that i remember!
The bandstand was indeed through a small gap facing the statues of the boys, also dont forget the putting green which was behind the parkies hut, and the water tap where everyone filled their bottles, and I can still remember the old midden toilets amongst the trees to the extreme right of the lake, another memory I have is picking coal off the railway bank behind the lake, we used to get to this down the old path to the devils tunnel, happy days
all coments about walmsley park bring back some realy good memories for me it was like a second home to us in the holidays with a bottle of pop and some butties we played all day those where the days kids to day have never lived
aitich did you get to the devils tunnel by walking in the brook you had to bend down to walk along it half way in there was a big iron door i went in there once never again i was so scared but i was only little i think i would like to go back in now if its still there
