No date on the photo but it llos to me like the mid to late fifties. The car enthusiasts will no doubt know

It looks so clean and tidy in that area.

If you view the enlarged version of this photo on the Wigan Archives site, the registration number of the dark vehicle (Cortina MkII ?) can clearly be seen to read KTB 677F.
This dates the photo to 1967 or later.

Thanks for posting that Veronica. Is the Chapel the plain building or the one with the pointed Archway ?
I know one of the cars, a VW 'Beetle', we had one when first married !

Helen - the chapel is the darker plain building.
The building to the right of it with the archway is the library.

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd June 2025 at 12:06

It’s not the archway Helen the doorway is actually in front of the lamp post. It may have been a house at one time. There’s a placard on the wall at the top.

Comment by: Les on 2nd June 2025 at 12:43

The plaque on the wall reads 'A Christian Meeting House 1858'.

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd June 2025 at 15:30

I meant a private house Les.

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd June 2025 at 16:28

Marvellous to think the buildings are still standing if they were there in 1858 and built before that time.

I think the dark car is a Ford Zephyr Mk4. That puts the photo at sometime after August 1966.

I have sent a more recent photo to PAD which may or may not appear.
Little has changed although the brickwork on both buildings looks to be much cleaner these days.

Yes, on looking again I see the notice board & plaque up on the wall.
I suppose a Christian Meeting House for dissenters of the C of E & followers of Wesley.

No,Helek Neither
It was the first of about 10 such meetinghouses in Wigan of the Churches of Christ. The chief man in Wigan was Mr Coop of the factory
They were insistent on Baptism by immersion and were often heckled in Market Square on that issue

Comment by: Malc on 10th June 2025 at 18:18

Les is correct a Ford Cortina mk2.
Never a Ford Zephyr, the Zephyr a much larger car.

Remember going to China Hos about thirty years ago. It was in the basement of the Christian Meeting House.
