My favourite place to go with pocket money when in Wigan. Going back a bit, I loved the wooden boxes on the island counters that were full of goodies. Good old Woolies.

In my teens it was all about make up, mainly lipstick and block mascara. I can see myself rifling through the lipsticks looking for one in particular called ‘Tangee’ or ‘Tango’ or something similar.

A fabulous photograph.

Woolworths vacated Wigan town centre around 1984. There was a previous conversation on this site about the 'whys & wherefores' as to why Woolies pulled out of Wigan but I've forgotten what the exact reasons where.

Sadly, as many people will know, these premises are now standing empty after WHSmiths closed for business last December. It seems like half the town is lying empty and neglected these days. Pity we can't go back 40 years to when this pic was taken.

If amazon, ebay, online banking and shopping and everything else the internet provides the consumer were to be be banned no doubt we would go back 40 years!

MikeW, you make be close to the reason, I'm not typing to disagree with your statement. But, for me and my family (parents and all), it actually came down to difficulties regarding the road system, traffic and parking.
The road system became uncomfortable, some car parks were difficult to get in and out of, rising costs of parking and parking for free on some of the streets disappeared.
Additionally, none of us were great lovers of the new market and other alterations to the town centre.
It's a shame, really. But, changes to a town centre can change some people's shopping habits and lead to irretrievable damage.
Although we are living in an era that shows definite signs of turning to the past for positive reasons, we cannot be sure of our future.
Are we going to demolish those mistakes and rebuild what we once had.
Berlin is showing signs of this!
